2002 CLK55 AMG Touchshift Question 1-2-3-4-D?
I know this may be a dumb question, but there is something that confuses me about the "touchshift" feature of the car. Now, when you use touchshift (manual mode) the gears shift from 1-2-3-4-D. Now, when you are in D technically this would be 5th gear manual mode. But, when it goes in D you are also technically back in "Auto Mode." So, how does this work? If you deccelerate the car as you are in manual mode "D" the car will downshift as if you were in "Auto Mode." So, whats the point? Maybe there is something I am not seeing or perhaps I do not know how to use it properly...
Also, they say if you hold the lever to the left touchshift picks the optimal gear.
I am sure any input would be better than where I am standing on this issue...
Thanks...

I had a feeling that my question sounded confusing...
Ok, this is what I meant to say....
I have driven cars before with this type of feature. But, when you shift thru all the gears up say 1-2-3-4-5 the 5th would hold, and if the car were decelerated the gear would stay in 5th and you would have to shift down manually.
Not with the Mercedes. When I shift 1-2-3-4-D and brake the car after it has gone to D it automatically downshifts for me w/o giving me the chance to downshift on my own. The system assumes the car is back in Automatic Mode when in reality I wanted it to stay in Manual...
So, is this just the way it is? Hope that clears my question...

It does not operate like an SMG. Hope this helps!

Yeah, I figured that was the case. Unfortunately I live in Michigan, and the car is in storage so I can't test it out.
Thanks for the input though

I tested the upshift theory again last night on the way home....left it in "2" and it did not upshift at redline.....but the fuel shutoff was a huge bummer!
I left it there for another 3-4 seconds...no upshift until I moved the lever to the right.

Seems to apply to cars with speed-shift on the steering wheel.
