NYIAS "Mystery AMG" CLK63 Black Edition?
#26
if the AMG engineers managed to figure a way to keep the rear end glued while the front end directs, then this car should be blast.
meanwhile, i was looking at a new 2007 G55 in the lauderdale showroom, where the stubborn salespersons were MSRP crazy, when i unexpectedly received a call from my preferred northern dealer, who said a client had declined delivery of the same and asked whether i'd like it. i said sure, what's the number? still waiting.
if i get it, then that'd keep me away from a CLK black series for a while.
what do you all think of the G55 in granite grey, with the new similarly-colored wheels?

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupé
Yup, the black series is here at last.
Or at least it's available over there. My ability to read German is spotty at best, but the quotation ...
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/atta...clk-63-amg.pdf
... puts the price bump up at about 20 percent over stock. That's not bad considering the special tuned motor (507 PS ponies) and especially the widebody chassis set-up. 9 inch rims up front with 265 tires! 285s out back. LSD. This baby will rock and roll.
1760 K is a tad lighter, no more. You can't eliminate the power hardtop so there is not going to be a big weight savings. Still, 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds as a factory figure ain't too shabby, even if it won't catch many Z06s or new 911 turbos.
Bottom line -- this looks to be a great driver's car, while still with the practicality of the CLK. But I can't believe MB will import it while not selling the regular CLK 63 coupe.

the CLK63 coupe's not such a great ride. of all the cars we drove around hockenheimring, it was chosen above the E63 estate/station wagon, but below every other model.

The main problem I see (provided that it is a CLK63 Black Edition) is that it will be $100,000+ today and will likely drop 30-40% in a year. Look at every other AMG model and see how fast they take a deprecation hit. Even the SLR has taken a beating. Don't get me wrong, I would love to own one. But, why would anyone pay that much for a Mercedes CLK and loss their a$$ in a year. They can't sell any of the CLK63's for $95,000 because of that very reason. My local dealer has actually approached me begging me to buy one of the CLK63's he is stuck with. It took them 1.5 years to sell the last SLR Mercedes crammed down his throat.
Mercedes needs a reality check. They make good cars, and they are getting better with each new model. But $95,000 for a CLK, come on! Limited production, hotter motor, LSD, blah blah blah, it's still a CLK.
Fastest way to make a small fortune? Take a large fortune and buy a Mercedes!

I've found my amg's and I've owned eight hold their value better than porsches. Ya, the SL65's and high mileage amg take a hit, but I've not had that experience. Then again, I don't buy at the end of the model cycle.

Do you think the people that are buying these cars are thinking it's an investment though? Most likely you'll be hard pressed to find one. It's a bit different than a regular AMG.

Interesting comment about MB frustration on selling the 63. I test drove the 63. Brutal powerful, better tranny. Better handling than a CLK550 with Sports option. Lovely sound. But that same stupid random throttle lag at low revs. The real problem with these cars is that they do not hold their value. 35% down after six months to trade in a CLK550 for a CLK63?? I laughed in the guys face. He called me back the next day saying he thought he could squeeze a few more dollars out. Even the MB dealers are now saying that the multitude of models is beginning to hurt them. Color me disgusted and looking at a Porsche.

the DTMs in the affalterbach AMG showroom had the coolest console mini-shifters. i hope they, or similar, make it into the US-bound CLK black series.
and there were two CLK DTM convertibles on the floor. if only...

2005 E55 Delivered 01/07/05
I am going to the AMG NYC auto show preview Thursday night. I hear they are going to show the new CL65 40th Anniversary model ( limited edition model of only 40 for the world). I'm not sure what the other car will be, I hope it is the new CLK63!!!

Limited production will go a long way to keeping the value up, then again who cares. If the car is fantastic then it doesn't sting so bad.
Yes my SL65 fell like a rock but I still love the car and have not sold it so who cares about the depreciation. If the car sucked perhaps it would be a different story.
Sounds like you have some issues since your Kleemanized CLK has a low cylinder.
My advice, buy cars you love..... and run the hell out of them.

Who buys cars as investments? This Black Series could be a really awesome car. Guess we may find out in NY. I for one love the look of it and think AMG is moving in the right direction.
