Fifth Gear reviews the CLK63 Black Series

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nHlhBEZuxE

The moment I saw that Jason Plato was the reviewer I knew he'd bash it. Anything outside of Ferrari he hates. Us owners know otherwise and virtually every paper review says otherwise too, but leave it up to good ol' Jason to find every negative he can think of.

Thanks for the link.
Though I thought his critique was dead on. He wasn't too brutal.
Everybody knows the transmission sucks for a track car and it is too heavy.
On top of that I take solace in his ripping the steering wheel. I thought I was losing my mind by not really liking it. It's too clunky. Give me an M car steering wheel. Outside those standardcomplaints he liked it, as do I.

I'd agree, however wtf was he talking about with not having enough torque down low, likely making it boring and the seating position???

Maybe he had the wrong mode selected. I can bang mine off the rev limiter going up or down.

Interesting he mentioned the weight as "heavy" and the last thing he said was the 997 GT3 and Turbo are both faster and cheaper.
Jim - were those GT3's you were spanking on the track 997's or 996's ?

I didn't find it too negative, but didn't understand the "off center" seat criticism. Has anyone experienced that in their US spec LHD cars?
The torque issue was a puzzle. What was he comparing to, a Dodge Ram diesel?
The steering wheel comment is purely personal. I love a fat wheel, and haven't found it to be a negative. I think with every car, you need to think about what the engineers were doing, and the design of the steering wheel tends to tell you where they hold their hands.
He did get the turn in point correctly, as this car turns in better than the tt. The throttle-on oversteer is also a big plus, which you tend not to get in the Porsche. I have tons of miles in Porsches of all types, and the BS is by far more enjoyable vehicle to me. Ever try a long sweeping turn in a tt Porsche? You grind off the outer edge of the outside front tire.
Unspoken is the beauty of the sound of the BS, tho the sound track makes it pretty evident. Is there anybody who prefers the sound of a tt Porsche to the BS? Certainly not me. AS

Jason's comment on torque was really funny. He drives a 911 turbo and claims that the Black has a lack of low end punch. He has small hands and doesn't like the seat angle. Has he sat in a Ferrari or Porsche? Then he says it's naught to 60 is 4.3 which a Gt3 would blow away.
I think he rolled one too many car.

Actually he said "naught to 62 in 4.3". And lets not forget his prized observation that he would suspect the car to be boring below the speed limit.

I read the comments here before watching the review so I was pleasantly surprised to see a pretty good review. The offset position must be for the RHD version as my seat appears to be in front of my steering wheel. I remember the original mini had an offset driving position and not many people complained about it and it didn't seem to stop the mini being a pretty successful competition car ... still I'm glad that the US doesn't have an offset ... at least not one I've noticed.

There was a comment about the gear change and he referenced the left paddle shifter ... maybe he had a bad one as I did ... it wouldn't always change. Once it was replaced it worked the way it should. I still think my 6-speed Range Rover shifts faster under manual mode though.

All in all, it was a thumbs up though ... so I'm happy
