List of Exhausts

Getting the mod bug and wanted to see what you guys have seen or heard for exhausts. I know Evosport makes it for our cars, but wanted to keep all options open for the BS. What else is available out there? Sound clips? Thanks!

When you say exhaust do you mean mufflers only, cat-back or header-back system? I would not mess with the stock mufflers, they make as much hp as any aftermarket muffler available, trust me, if there were a better muffler system it would be on my car. The only advantage to going with aftermarket mufflers would be about a 9 pound (total) weight savings the over stock units. The AMG mufflers make awesome power and they are very well constructed. Are you considering a cat-delete system? That is where you will make some hp, but there are some obvious emissions testing issues shoud you go that route.

Not sure what you are after, but here is what I did, all done by Evosport. Secondary cat's deleted, resonators deleted and replaced with X-pipe. Rear mufflers kept stock, since there is pretty much nothing in them from the factory. Above 2000 rpm, the sound is beautiful, especially under load. The only drawback is when at full song, "they" can hear you coming from a mile away.
This way you free up some HP and get rid of some of the weight at the same time.

i'm looking for catback + headers. Anyone in the Norcal with this on their car? I would love to hear what it sounds like. SMP, if I travel down your neck of the woods, I would sure love to hear this sound you speak of!!

Thanks jrcart for the advice and pm. Your input is greatly appreciated.

SMP, if you have a sound file, I'd love to hear it.

I actually just bought it back last weekend from a guy I sold it to 15 months ago in Northern VA. It's probably one of the cleanest in existance; one of 77 1995 GTSs and one of 30 5-speed GTSs brought to North America for MY 1995 with just 12k miles on it. I originally bought it from the 1st owner in 2000. The guy I sold it to put all of 100 miles on it. He's a large $ guy in the D.C. area. Retired at ~40 years old 5 years ago after selling his company to a defense contractor. It's an awesome GTS!

So if I am not mistaken that gives you one of the first 928's off the production line and one of the last 928's off the production line... I am not an expret on P cars, but I do believe 95 was the end of the run for the front engine 928.

Great looking car

Thanks. That's right, first and last. Been a 928 fan ever since college in the early 80's. I have all 406 of the last version (928 GTS) documented on my site (www.928registry.org) including this rare one:

http://www.928registry.org/1995-928GTS-Pearlglanz.htm

.....sorry for the highjack, I love to talk about 928s.

Sorry, no sound files. I thought about it, maybe one day I'll get around it and do it. I only live 10 min. south of LAX, stop by and you'll get a first hand experience of the sound .

Chuck, beautiful 928 GTS. I love midnight blue. I also like the Speedline wheels you have on it. Did you take them off a 964 3.6 turbo, since that was the only car it came with from the factory? The 928 GTS was in my opinion the best 928 ever, especially in the 5 speed, didn't care too much for the automatics. As I recall the 5 speeds had a "Berg Getriebe", so you could shift faster from 2nd to 3rd and vise versa.

That green GTS was suppose to be THE last one off the production line and was special ordered by a customer. However, when he found out there were a few more produced after his car, he backed out and Champion got stuck with the car.....for a loooong time!

Just curious but do you also have any engine mods? I can only imagine the insane sound on that car.

Just a couple of mods to the engine. I paid more attention to the suspension and set up. I prefer cornering speed over straight line speed. With the set up I'm running right now, the steering is very direct and is more sensitive at speed. Turn in is now so precise, that you have to be on the throttle early in order to transfer some weight to the rear. In comparison, it makes my M6 feel like a Rolls Royce. The 3 most important changes to me when I buy a new car: Wheels, suspension and exhaust.

There is a track day coming up on the 25th in Willow. I'm looking forward to see how the changes perform on the track.

Someone is bound to ask, so why delay: what suspension mods?

Springs and helper springs changed to H&R's, which are about 10% stiffer. Settings on the shocks for compression and rebound changed. Alignment of caster, camber and toe changed. I'm still waiting for the rear adjustable control arms. I talked to Simon at Evosport, unfortunately it's not high on their priority list. If they ever make them, it would be a big improvement. The stock ones are huge and heavy. It would also allow you to dial in more negative camber in the rear.

Thanks. The wheels are RH 3.6 replicas and are very good quality. I did take them apart myself, had the centers painted to match and put them back together. 5-speeds are definitely the way to go with the dog-leg shift pattern. I've had both automatic and manual 928s....

The last US car is/was refered to as the "Linton car" as that was the customers last name. He lived in the NJ area somewhere and you're right about how Champion ended up with it. Long story about ownership and nobody has seen the car in 10 years. Last known locale was supposedly France? Nobody knows for sure yet. Here is the build sheet on the car, while most GTSs of that time had an MSRP of ~$85k this one was double that:
