If your home has been targeted by pros, there isn't much of anything you can do.
Good suggestion and will do it when I upgrade. I had my telephone line moved under ground several years ago so it couldn't be cut where it terminates (easy and recommended) at the house. You're right, if a pro wants what's in your house it's theirs. All I can do is prevent the amateur from considering it. Security alarm yard signs, dog warnings, exterior light motion detectors, interior light timers, fake cameras, and mail that is picked-up regularily are great visual deterrents that will cause the amateur to move on to your neighbors house. Too bad they didn't think about their own security.

SMP, you are absolutely right about the dogs. I have a Rotweiler that was trained in German for the exact reasons you mention. The dog is very attentive to what is going on around her and is like glue when I'm home. I had a friend make a playful jab at me, and she started to lunge at him to protect me. I quickly commanded her to back off, which she did, but it assured me that she is "on the job."

I do have one question though . . . if I say the "relax" (in English) around her, she does just about the opposite. She stares at me and is very attentive. I asked a friend who speaks German if there was a word that sounded something like "relax," but she couldn't think of anything. The people who trained her don't seem to know either. Any ideas as to why I get this reaction from her?

My first language is german, and I can't think of a word that sounds like or is even close to "relax" either. She is probably just hanging on to every word you say because she is very attached to you. It also depends on your tone of voice. For instance, if you are aggravated, so will the dog be. What I like about the Schutzhund training, is that the dog was trained to react at a certain "situation", and not to hate people. That way they have a clear understanding what's expected from them.

Here are some german commands that your dog should understand, since she was trained at Schutzhund. You want her to relax: the command is "Langsam" (slow down). Or, you just command her into the "Platz" (lay down) position. I hope that helps.

IMO, the most successful deterrent to being jacked is to make sure you are the LEAST attractive target in your neighbourhood by a good margin, and chaces are they will hit somewhere else first.

In other words, live well within your means, dont flash your success or wealth and dont do anything ostentatious to attract attention, and if you follow all all the good suggestions above, you are likely to go through life without too much drama.

SMP, thanks for your reply. I think you are correct in saying that she is very attentive, and when I say "relax" she is trying to figure out if I'm giving her a direct command and what exactly is that command. (Note to self: Stop saying that around the dog.)

I tell them I bought them used, they are several years old, and I don't discuss their original or current values.

It's a CRAZY world out there and I'm concerned that I'm being targeted for possible future break-in and theft. I have increased my home and garage security in several obvious and non-obvious ways but was wondering if I should do more or, am I just over reacting? We haven't experienced any problems in my neighborhood for the ten years I've been here but there is always a first time. Should I contact my security company and ask them to install additional garage security (e.g., alarm the garage door, motion sensors, break glass, closed circuit, etc.)? What would you do and have you increased your security? If you did, what did you do?
I am paranoid because of past experience so here are some suggestions:

- make sure the garage door has contacts in connection with the home alarm, most aren't

- make sure your house is well lit inside and out, the driveway and especially side doors/windows. I always have one or two vacant bedrooms light on all night so they think someone is still awake.

- some alarm company offers cell service instead of regular phone lines and most home alarm have some sort of battery back-up

- you mentioned motion sensor, i've been told it will not work in the garage because of the temperature changes which will set off false alarm

- you mentioned fake cameras, get the real thing, they are very inexpensive now. installation on the other hand can be expensive depending on where you want the cameras but if you are handy yourself, it's a day of work but well worth it. Mine cost $2k years back but newer better ones can be had for less than $500. Of course these are not professional grade surveillance system like they have in the banks but I am not about to spend tens or hundreds of thousands either. They do just fine for me and even caught the gardener taking a **** on the side yard and the neighbor's kid ringing the doorbell and ran.
