Luke,
From design esthetics point of view, blacked out wheels (gloss or satin) lack balance and contrast which causes the viewer to lose the proportion of the wheels in the wheel well as well as the tire. Lacking color creates a distortion which could be easily remedied by adding a simple silver lip to the wheel. In my opinion most of the blacked out wheels are based on imitation to an industrial (aka race) application.
So stock or gloss black with a silver lip.

Personally, I don't see a problem with colored wheels as long as its not overdone and blends with the rest of the car. With a white BS, you could probably get away with several different color wheels, although I think Black or Gunmetal really goes well.

I like matte black with a satin finish. Matte just always looks dirty. The satin gives a bit more sheen.
I had Matte Black M40 HREs and Now I have Matte/Satin EuroTeck Wheels with Black Chrome. They look alot better.
