Aluminum Hood Myth
I am having a custom hood built but I needed a donor hood for the mold, I searched high and low, ebay, craigslist, and dozens of phone calls to high end european salvage yards but still no luck. I ended up having to buy a new one from my parts department at my local dealership, heres what I discovered. The BS hood has a unique part number but the hood is not unique and it certainly is not aluminum. Why would MB give it a special part number?

I will be calling the dealership tomorrow to get a price on a CLK 350 hood just to make sure I didn't get hit with a Black Series tax LOL.

Yes it's steel, wonder why they did not use something lighter. I am making a custom vented bonnet and had to buy a replacement hood to work on to. What design are you going with Jim?

Search the C55 forum. The hoods should be the same, I thought Dad's or someone else has a carbon fiber hood. There are a few on Ebay but they look like crap and are made in china.

They are not interchangeable. Part numbers are different

I guess we are all getting new hoods designed. Mine is going to have a functional tunnel ram air plus heat extraction vents.

With the amount of design and thought that goes into your developments, I'm regretting I ever started to produce one. Really excited to see what you have in store.

Mine is going to include new airboxes which are 3" longer than the stock airboxes, you know how much air these things need air. I told the guys making the hood that function needs to come before styling so mine might not be the best looking of the three but it will offer the most performance.

oh! What kind of material are you using? are you grafting a fibreglass or CF addition onto the stock steel bonnet. i would love to see this design. Mine is just going to have a series of totally flush vent grills like the Brabus Bullit

I was hoping they could graft onto a stock hood but they said they couldn't with what I wanted done so its going to be a complete new hood, I had to buy the stock hood for a mold because I didn't want to harm my stock hood so I just figured spending $800 on a spare would be the best way to go. Its going to be glass, the shop doing it said CF will only offer a weight savings of 7-8 pounds over glass and glass will be easier to prep and paint with a perfect finish.
