CLK63BS
Soon to be new BS owner, couple questions.

I'm in the process of buying a CLK63BS (going through PPI, and assuming it comes out clean, it is pretty much a done deal). I plan on making this my DD. I'm going to add a rear seat so I can take my kids (2 and 4 year olds). I found a good deal on a rear seat from a 2004 CLK55 (black leather). I understand that the battery needs to be moved, and other potential problems? I *ASSume* that the mounting points for the seats is still there? It is also my understanding that the LATCH system mounts are built into the seats (is this correct?). Since only my kids will be back there (and they are in child seats), I don't care if any of the electrical stuff (if any?) for the rear seats doesn't work.

Also, since I live near Boston, I'm going to need snow tires. Are there any inexpensive 18" wheels that will work? FWIW, Tirerack says that 18" wheels won't clear the tie rods (but I don't know if this applies to their 18" wheels, or ALL 18" wheels). If not, are there wheels from any other MB vehicles that will fit?

Thanks, and I can't wait!

I have an 04clk55 and had the rear seat bottoms out recently for a fuel pump issue.

They bolt down in the front to studs and hinge back down flat into a couple stud mounts which the seats snap into.

Someone here with the mb main CD can possibly download some screen shots of what I'm referring too.

GL. Sounds like a sweet daily driver.

PJK,

Welcome to the club!

First the good news...Wheels
I have a custom set of 17 front and 16 rear drag wheels so you can go smaller.

Now the bad new...seats
While a couple have done it, putting a back seat in your car will not pass DOT as the load rating is not high enough. I would love a back seat but I am not about to put my or anyone's children at risk. Seriously think about this one... It is your children!

I'm sure someone can give you a definitive answer but I doubt anything smaller than 20s will clear the brake calipers.

I've bought some 19" snow tires. So my question is, are there any inexpensive 19" wheels (aftermarket or OEM) that will work? I want to have a dedicated winter setup.

Thanks!

I just said I have 17 fronts and 16 rears...that is pretty definitive...

Congrats on you acquisition. Tirerack used my BS to measure clearances, when I presented the same question, and I believe my car is their reference for your query. (they have a very sophisticated rack, and have an engineer, Bob Kobayashi, who uses laser equipment to measure everything). The problem is the steering knuckle hitting the rim of any 18 inch wheel. I didn't find a good snow option at that time. I do have an extra set of factory rims, so there will be some point when I again search for the larger size snow tire. Let me know what you learn.
My snow solution is a CTS-V coupe and a tt996, both on 4 snows. My BS has about 41,000 non-snow miles. It has been fantastic. AS

AS,

Dumb question but if Tirerack has such a sophisticated rack, how come I have 17" front rims on my car and can use them? I think they need to look at what size rims are being run before issuing a blank statement that they wont fit.

Guys, Tire Rack is right and wrong...a 9.5 or 10 inch wide 17 or 18 will not fit without hitting the steering knuckle as AS pointed out. A 17 will physically fit but only with a different offset, backspacing and width. The only reason Earl and I are able to run small diameter fronts is because we are running very skinny front wheels for the drag strip and they clear the stearing and suspension components. You can not run a 17 x 9.5 or 17 x 10 with a proper offset on these cars. I do believe you can run a 18 x 9.5 up front with a slightly varied offset that will clear the steering components.

Are there any inexpensive 19" wheels that will work? Specifically, I'm looking for takeoff wheels from another MB car (or other make for that matter). Just something inexpensive to run during the winter.

Inexpensive is a relative term, if you are looking for wheels that cost $250 a peice I think you are going to be disappointed. I am not aware of any other MB with a similar offset and back spacing. I know several guys on this forum have lookied into putting Black Series wheels on E55's, E63's and C63's without much luck so reversing the process is just as unlikely I would assume.

My only thought is that the it might be easier putting other wheels on the BS because of the lower offsets and wider rims. Specifically, I can add spacers to push other MB wheels outwardly, whereas that won't work when trying to put BS wheels on E55/C63's.
