Hope info help's (3-5 sec cold crank start) NORMAL ?? Raspu
For an old school racer, it sounded like a dry bearing and I hated to have a brand new car failing on me, so we took it back to be looked at. This morning they called and said it was a normal part of the twin turbo's cold start sequence and was part of an emissions cycle.
They went on to say that owners of prior 550's (including us, obviously) were likely to complain because the old engine was so much quieter.
Well, I'm glad it is not broken, but man it sounds like crap for the first 20 seconds or so on a cold start up.

I think they will find that and fix it for you. I would guess that it only happens on cold start up and the longer it has sat, the worse the issue.
I will post back to the forum after I visit my dealer. I noticed a couple of pricy defective items I paid for just before Christmas which are on the "covered" list so it should be a great conversation.

I took it in the shop for twice. 1st time they replaced:
1. cover on right front cylinder head
2. cover on left front cylinder head
3. left secondary drive chain tensioner
4. right secondary drive chain tensioner
5. flance gastket
6. hexalobular bolt
7. oil pressure check valves
got the car back. But the problem still there. Took it back for second time they quoted in the paper work "no abnormal noises heard"
The knocking noise is still there and it just does not seem right for the engine.
What should I do know? or any suggestions?
Dealer reported it needed a new camshaft adjuster and chain tensioner. Quote was $5500. -- Sorry to say I said no, went to sales and bought an Audi
Yeah. I hear you. Its the tensioners and it isnt that much at independent shop. But i hear you. Sometimes thicker viscosity oil fixes it. I did add oil additive from Lubeguard and 5w50 or 15w50 and mine doesnt make noise anymore. But prob is a bandaid. Will see
For anyone thinking of actually getting the engine fixed.. the worst part is not knowing if the opposite side will have an issue right after fixing the current issue.
One other note: We MB diy'rs are spoiled by having bootleg WIS copies on eBay. It's a lot harder to do things on other cars without YouTube.
