What car do you guys think would win in a drag race?? Our 550's or a c63 ?
Member
Raced my buddy who had the p31 package. We are faster from the start but after 120km/hr or so c63 just flies. More power and better tranny
Is your car a 4matic or 2wd?

4matic.
We also both raced and he starting pulling around 180 km. My car then broke from the tune (spark plug melted) so now he flat out beats me (back to stock)

Unless I'm missing something here, the C63 would destroy the CLS. Afterall,More power + less weight = faster.Originally Posted by akeni

Yea but the cls m278 engine is underrated
Plus it has 500+ ft lb's of torque

I actually owned both cars and drag raced them both at the same track. My C63 when stock it would run a 12.9(best) and a 109-110mph(best traps) at SIR(Southwest international raceway) in Tucson, AZ at 3100 ft elevation and on 91oct
I recently ran my bone stock cls 550(rwd) and was able to run a few 12.8 and 111mph with a gas mixture of about 96oct..
In my honest opinion and from own experience, the M156(C63) might have "more power" on paper but the M278 with "only 402" makes much more power that advertised. The power delivery on the M156 is more towards the top end with very decent torque on the tap but the CLS engine has much more torque down low
My C63 AMG weighted at the official NHRA scales 3900lbs while my CLS weighted 4132lbs. Both cars were equally gutted with no spare tires, floor mats and same fuel levels.
Yes you can tune the C63 and make ton of power..no doubt but you can get also same power and more torque on the CLS.
My C63 ran a best of 12.4@118.5mph with MHP stage II(long tube headers, air filters and tune). I need to do a tune on my CLS 550 and run it to see if the CLS 550 ultimately is equally fast than the C63.
Last but not least, I think that the CLS would ultimately walk away on higher speeds. The CLS has a drag coefficient of CX.26 while the C63 is no even near that
So, that is my true tales from having owned both cars. Here are some links from when I took my cars to the drag strip:

I am nt sure about the better tranny. The first gen C63 transmission are sluggish. The second version is slightly improved but nothing like the competition(DSG , PDK,, etc)

That is the problem. You see things from one single angle. You said more power and I say what about the torque. You said less weight and I say what about the aerodynamics.
I know what you are saying.. I seen the 3.7 0-60 @117mph on the P31 coupe, Ii also seen the 12.4@115 on the first sedan tested C63 but I also seen my own CLS 550 beat my own C63 on a solid consistent runs..never mind the extra weight and the "less power".
Remember, the C63 have factory 255's, the CLS have 285's rubber, that makes some difference alone. Then the power delivery, the M278 put more torque immediately.. I am just saying.

My friend had the mct tranny used in the sls I believe. He has the edition 1 c63 so maybe his is faster. Before when we both didn't have tunes, the reason he pulled away was due to the transmission. ( each shift on my car would allow him to jump slightly further ahead).

^^ I believe it(the trans mission advantage). On these cars the difference is noticeable, a fraction of a second on a car that is capable of accelerating very well from a roll is a significant advantage.

Let us know how your CLS 550 tune goes and what numbers you get.

^^ Here is a guy that ran a 12.3@115mph on a CLS 550 at 6' elevation(practically at sea level)

My car runs identical times if you apply the official NHRA altitude conversion chart. Believe me, the car feels fast and is fast.

Other than a tune I had the resonators cut. On that night I also filled gas. I hit 240kmph that night, parked my car in the garage and went to sleep. Next morning, there was a CEL and Mercedes told me the spark plug melted in cylinder 5, and there may be some ceramic pieces in the cylinder. Luckily, the pieces didn't scratch anything and the car was fine. I can't say the tune was the cause of the problem, but this issue personally happened to me. The tuner didn't have the chance to verify the computer afterwards nor can I say the tune was fully the problem. Just sharing my experience, I would still tune my car, just didn't have the chance to send it in yet.
