2014 CLS550 (RWD) Winter wheels and tires
I recently bought a 2014 CLS550 (RWD). It came with AMG 18" wheels. I am looking to buy a new set of wheels & tires for the winter. I live in the Washington DC Metro area.
I am tempted to buy a 19" or 20" wheel, but as always there are so many factors to consider. Ideally I would like to drive 19 or 20 wheels during summer and 18" with snow tires on winter. Since I bought the car brand new, the 18" tires have plenty of life left.
If I got after market 19" wheels (~ max $250 per wheel) and matching snow tires, I will get to drive the 19" wheels during winter and 18" wheels for summer, till both the tires wear out. Then I can swap 19 for summer and 18 for winter.
I do like the luxurious ride in the 18" wheels. I can compromise it a little bit but don't want the harsh ride like my earlier BMW. Questions are:
1. Should I even consider 20 or stick with 19? Or should I just stick with 18 to maintain the ride quality?
2. The stock AMG 18 looks boring. For a good quality, sexy 19/20 that will go well with the Diamond White under $250/wheel do you have any recommendation?
3. Winter tire recommendation for a mild snow, reasonably cold DC winter.
Thanks,
CM
The ride on 19's with winter tires is still very comfortable, but will be slightly better with 18's.
I've ran Blizzaks, but currently have Michelin Pilot Alpin tires. Pirelli Sottozero's also seem to get great reviews. Any winter tire is going to be substantially better than an all-season.
Important rule to remember with winter tires; the narrowest tire you can live with is the best for snow/ice traction - I'm currently running 19x8.5 wheels with 245's on all four corners. 245/35/R19 is recommended if you chose to run 19's.
