Wish me GL450 CDI
Gets no clarity in what is the correct name for the coupe of W218 and C218, for VIN decode on lastvin.com there is «WDD2183931A ******» in VIN number and the code «F218 SERIES PRODUCTION 218» … but no C or W

…. and the shooting brake X219

So when speaking in generalities you can say W218, but when you need parts and want aftermarket, you need C or X. I work for Benz, and I was going to install an air strut. Guy ordered the strut from Rock Auto who says this strut is interchangeable with OEM. Incorrect. So just be aware, when you're ordering parts. It's C or X.

Old strut, 3 bolts and a snap ring. Odd shape.

New strut. No snap ring, round.

Parts catalog picture. This strut does not seem to be available through any big name "reputable" sellers, most likely due to the model designation confusion.

2015 CLS63 S AMG
So confusing…

In regards to the differences between C218 and W218, what would a 2014 CLS 550 be considered as, and what would a 2015 CLS63 AMG S considered as?

I tried to literally input “C218” or “W218” on the search bar on ebay or even google but nobody can really designate which one belong to which.

My biggest question is, are the interior parts somewhat interchangeable, like for example, I wanted to buy carbon fiber covers for my center compartment for my 2015 63 S, but covers for 2014 CLS 550 would show up. Ebay says it won’t fit my car, but is that true? Someone please clarify these things.

To the left was my 2014 CLS 550, to the right, my 2015 CLS63 AMG S. It’s obvious that the looks are different, but which parts (interior and exterior) are interchangeable between the two? Which one is C218 and which one is W218?

W222, W221, W218, W211
you are mixing pre- and post-facelift cars here, not the model code names. As you read earlier, C or W in case of a CLS is interchangeable.
"C" for consistency with other coupe-lines. "W" for historical accuracy. Don't look for any deeper meaning here. It's the same W218/C218 car.

2015 is a facelift model, meaning new headlights, new bumper (front and back), larger console radio display, steering wheel matching W205s etc.... The car on the right also has the AMG engine which has a totally different bonnet (unlike yours non-AMG model). if you had AMG model (not only the AMG-trim) then you would have similar bonnet on a pre-facelift model too, that also means different front grill to match the center embossed part and most likely a bit different grill style too.

Show us what parts are you looking for and we might be able to help.
Also - parts vendors usually specify if the part is meant for CLS 2011+ (all), CLS 2015-2017 (FL only), or CLS 2011-2014 (pre-FL).

To confuse drives in US - there is also a shooting brake model, code-named X218, but that's whole another topic...

both cars in the pics are actually my cars, well, except the pre-facelift 550 which I sold. The one with the facelift is actually my 63 AMG S now.

I just want a carbon fiber cover for my central compartment (armrest) because the leather seems to always just tear. It’s the same for both model, right?

CLS is a Coupe (C)

Ok, I think I got it. Based on all the responses I see where the confusion is. The CLS is seen as both a coupe (C) and a sedan (W). But since Mercedes considers it a coupe, it seems the proper designation is C218.
