Vibration (motor mounts)
I have vibration while driving that I've slowly tried to isolate so I know what to replace. It happens most on deceleration and particularly around 1700 rpm in light throttle, regardless of gear. I've narrowed it down to motor mounts, so I have both front mounts and the transmission mount currently sitting in my FCPEuro shopping cart, ready to go. I already purchased the tool I need to remove the upper bolts. I'll have her on a lift so I will be inspecting the driveshaft support bearing, flex disc, differential mounts and a complete suspension/chassis/brakes inspection.
I'm only about 90% sure this will fix the problem since I tried the brake test with the hood open and while the engine moved, it seem controlled. I bought this car 6 weeks ago so I don't know how smooth idle is, but I can tell she's running. Either way, 8 years old tells me they'll be an improvement even if it doesn't eliminate the issue.
Before I pull out the credit card, I wanted to hit you guys up to see if there is anything else this may be?
Thanks all!
I replaced both motor and transmission mounts today and it was a lot easier than I anticipated. Granted the lift made it much faster.
The passenger side was replaced in about 15 minutes by removing it to the rear. The drivers side required me to drop the steering rack. It's 4 bolts for the rack and 1 for the steering coupler. Then it comes out the front. I originally planned to drop the exhaust but this was much easier.
I unbolted one side at a time, using the bolted side to help rotate the engine up and increasing the height. A transmission lift was used to push the motor up. The special tool I ordered was not needed.
The transmission mount is straightforward and was a simple remove and replace by lifting the transmission slightly. Total time was a little over an hour.
The difference is incredibly dramatic. It eliminated all drivetrain vibration, a small clunk over bumps in sport mode and a clunk when the transmission downshifts into 4th gear. I've done this on several vehicles and I'm always amazed how new the vehicle feels afterwards. The life expectancy of mounts is 5-7 years but replacement is never on any maintenance schedules. Check out the side by sides and how squashed these things are with 67k/8yrs on them: Now for side by side pictures:
