I experience it too. If I recall correctly, it is at least in part due to the fact that Mercedes A/C can both de-humidify moist air (like any A/C) but also it can humidify dry air. Like any humidifier, you'll get that smell when you first turn it on if it has been actively adding moist air to the cabin when last used.

You may also be growing mushrooms in the vents. ;-) Do a search for "mold smell" The stinky socks syndrome has come up a number of times. My suggestion is, take it to the service center and have them treat the system with a fungicide.

I am currently going throught the same problem, but I told my advisor it smelled like "stink feet"! It has been in twice with no fix. The dealer is going to foot the bill for a non MB covered fix ($300 +) which is to run ozone through the system for a couple of days in order to kill the mold which is the cause of this smell.

Exclamation

CLK's had a similar problem, the AC condensor drain pan was not angled correctly to allow proper drainage. Hope this helps!
