For the most part I know a few people that drive the CLS and have no idea how anything works on the car other than putting in the key, selecting Drive and releasing the parking brake.
The CLS has a button below the shifter for the Aitmatic suspension that allows you to raise the entire vehicle height almost an addional 1/2 inch to an inch of travel up in the air. I sometimes see people driving around with it in this position. Most likely you see some with that feature engaged. That's why the cars sit higher than others.
