The chrome ring pull off pretty easily. It sound weird but if you soak them in regular bleach the chrome will dissolve. I ended up painting them with HOK paint and they turned out great. Beat buying a new cup holder from the stealership.

I have the open one too. If you hold the button in the center and lift up on the part with the chrome it will pull right out. I just swapped that part when mine started chipping but unfortunately I had to purchase the whole part. No big deal I just swapped the part I needed.

its not the chrome i want to replace. its the actual whole assembly. the spring loaded part does not work, i have scoured the internet and keep coming up with the same document posted above which is not correct for removing the center console to get to the screw on my W219
