Have you had a previous battery replacement, or just the one you're presently running on? I'm asking because I'm also running on a replacement 48v for just about a month now myself, without problem. I haven't seen any posts by anyone who's new replacement battery also failed, and I'm hoping that's a good sign.

Same issue with 2020 450 GLS

Mine was at the dealer for 15days and all they did was remove the paint from the terminals!
mercedes did not even want to do that. They said they were told to clear the codes and try to replicate the problem and give it back to the owner to see if it happens again. I refused it! So. they were forced to something and did the paint terminals as their fix. I have owned Mercedes over the years and can’t explain them now. My other Mercedes is a s63 cabriolet. They need customer service to become customer service again and so focused on just selling cars!

Another 48V Battery Issue

My brand new (731 miles) All Terrain is sitting in the garage waiting for a flatbed to haul it in, for the second time in its short life. The dealer replaced the dead 48 volt battery at 191 miles, and I'm experiencing the same exact problem that I did then. The dashboard reads "Stop Vehicle - See Operator's Manual", and the MercedesMe app is showing the engine as "on", although it is completely dead other than some auxiliary electrical power, no doubt from the 12 volt battery. I love the car but this is getting old real fast. I know a lot of other people have experienced problems with the 48 volt battery; however, I haven't read any posts about someone having a second brand new battery problem in such a short time. Any ideas?

UPDATE: The dashboard showed a new message this time: "12V Battery - See Owner's Manual". That gave me hope that the problem wasn't the 48V battery again. However, when Roadside came out, he tested the 12V and it was fine. So if it isn't the 12V and isn't the 48V, what is it? Waiting now for Roadside to return with a 2-man crew and an SUV to tow the car out of the garage so the flatbed can reach it. This is very discouraging. I got the car on April 19 and the car died on May 3 with under 200 miles on it. It's now June 5 with 731 miles on it and it's again on the way to the shop. I'm hoping someone out there has some insights they can offer as I'm losing confidence. Thanks in advance.

So have you discussed bulletin in link with lead tech/shop foreman furthermore, has dealer reached out to MBUSA for technical assistance as documented “If any abnormalities open a PTSS case with preliminary documentation requested.”

Thank you, konigstiger. I just printed out the bulletin you had posted earlier. No discussions so far. Still waiting for Roadside to come out to take the car in. They promised they would get on it first thing Monday morning.

2020 GLS 48v malfunction

My dealer has this bulletin and opened a file with Mercedes. Mercedes Corp said to clear all codes and try and replicate the problem. Dealership had it 2 weeks and no codes. Mercedes said to give the vehicle back to the customer and see if it happens again! I refused to take it back and Mercedes said to sand the terminals; I questioned how this be the cause as the car has almost 24k miles! Dealer is between a rock and a hard place. They agreed with me, but Mercedes won’t authorize any more repairs until it happens again!
we love the car but our confidence with MB is in question. I can’t believe their lack of concern!
I am a long time customer and also have a S63 cabriolet. MB’s response make no sense. The dealer thinks MB doesn’t have a fix for this issue as it is across multiple product lines with this drive train.

That is really bad news. I'm about to take a 300 mile round trip and I shudder to think of this happening in the middle of nowhere. So far, both failures have occurred at my home. While that's certainly aggravating, at least we've been in safe harbor when it's occurred.

If everyone referenced bulletin and MB received a number of "documented" PTSS inquiries from multiple dealers MB will not be able to readily dismiss it.

I put a copy of the bulletin on the seat of the car as it was being towed away, and brought it to the attention of the dealership.

My question is has anyone else who's experienced an inability to start in one of the mild hybrids had a successful resolution from MB? Replacing the 48V battery did not solve my problem apparently.

I had been thinking that my problem is identical to all of those described in this thread; however, after reading the posts again, my situation is a little different:

1. I've never had a problem while driving. In each case, my 2021 All Terrain just refused to start after being idle for a short period of time (3 hours the first time and overnight the second time.)
2. I have never received a "48 volt battery malfunction" message, even though after my fist engine failure, the dealer did in fact REPLACE the 48 volt battery." In both cases, however, I received the following message: "Stop Vehicle See Operator's Manual". Also, in the first case, my MercedesMe app showed "12 volt battery critical". In the latter case, MercedesMe showed "12 volt battery low". Also, iin the latter case I received a dashboard massage "12 V Battery See Operator's Manual". However, when Roadside tested the 12 volt battery, he said it was normal. Also, I have been monitoring the 12 volt battery regularly, and it was above 14 while driving, as the Roadside tech said it should be, even just before the last engine failure. So I am getting 13 volt battery messages even though the problem has apparently not been the 12 volt battery.

So the car has gone to the dealer on a flatbed twice in the first 731 miles (the first 4+ weeks) that I have owned it. The tech will do diagnostics tomorrow and I am really curious on what will turn up.

Called MBUSA

I called MBUSA after receiving a survey on my last service.
They escalated my case for buy back review.
I told them all I want to to be assured they have a fix and they said this is all they could offer.
Maybe if enough of us do this it will result in a fix!

The original 48V battery that came with the car (Battery #1) died two weeks and 196 miles after delivery. The car just wouldn't start. The dealer replaced it with a new 48V battery (Battery #2). Four weeks and 535 miles later the car wouldn't start again, and the dealer has told me they need to replace the battery yet again (Battery #3). I'm attributing this to some earlier posts that claimed that there was a bad batch of 48V batteries that came out of Germany, and that Battery #2 just happened to be from the same batch as Battery #1, because nobody has offered a better explanation. I thought I read somewhere on this site that they've now identified the batch of bad batteries by production date or serial number (I can't recall), and I'm hoping that is the case because I certainly don't want Battery #3 to meet the same fate as its predecessors (hoping the third time is the charm). If anyone happens to have that information about the "bad batch", I'd appreciate your input so I can pass it on to the dealer.

While I'm beginning to think my 2021 All Terrain has a cloud over its head, I really do appreciate the fact that my dealer has been forthcoming about the problem, as others on this site have written that their dealers have tried all kinds of "fixes" before finally agreeing to replace the 48V battery. That may simply because MBUSA doesn't want to readily replace these them (I'm told they cost a few thousand dollars). Anyway, I'm hoping my dealer can find Battery #3 quickly, as I know that hasn't always been the car with some others who've posted on the subject, and I'm praying it is more reliable than the previous two. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks!

2021 GLE 450
I am the new entrant to the 48V bad battery batch. Got the 2021 GLE450 last November (custom order) and got towed to the dealer yesterday and was told the 48V is dead. I sure hope this is not a recurring problem with this battery.

Yes I have had in my 2020 CLS, several times including today and MB says no fix for the car.

Same problem with my 2 month old CLS53. Car was in my garage and couldn't start and had to be towed to dealership. This was two weeks ago. Dealer tells me they are still waiting for parts. This is worrisome. btw I am in BC, Canada. Anyone in Canada with same problem?

13 vehicles here in Las Vegas with that issue over a year old and no attempt to fix the vehicles. Note the attached service record and email.

My 2 cents is that they are deliberately ignoring the issue.

Welcome to the club you don't want to belong to. If you go to post #40, you'll see that I'm now on my third 48 volt battery and the car barely has 1,100 miles on it. What I've learned from posts on this site and from some other research is that there's been a bad batch of 48 volt batteries coming out of Germany. I believe the part number for the problematic battery is Part No. 000-982-68-1 and, while I believe Mercedes has discontinued it, they are still supplying it to the dealers in the U.S. anyway. When my car was at the dealer after it wouldn't start the last time, I alerted them to the issue in hopes that they could make sure that my next battery was from a different batch, but they told me that I wold be getting whatever Mercedes sent them. So, once again, my car is running on Part No. 000-982-68-14, and my fingers and toes are crossed that this one won't be one of the bad ones.
