ECM placement exposed to heat

Are there a reasons/concerns that the ECM is placed so close to the engine/turbos that would be exposed to so much radiant heat?

I believe the SLS's ECM was placed by the battery which was engineered with heat insulation.

It seems Mercedes engineers intentionally wanted to bake our ECMs right over the motor?

Sure there are 'cooling fins' on top of the ECM, but that would work just as well as a heat sink to soak in more heat.

I placed my hand over the ECM after I shut off the engine and it was extremely uncomfortable due to the heat.

Welcome to the forum Blackout.

My CL63 ECU in similar place on opposite side. Bosch has been making these for a long time I'm sure they've taken heat into consideration. I'm just glad it's not wedged in like the C class.

Interesting username/load. Do you think it will last or do you think it'll fall by the way side like other niche calibers i.e. Sig 357?

Thanks for your reply AMG 17GT. Good to know it is a proven design I guess. Regardless, I may add a heat barrier around and under the ECM for peace of mind (typical survivalists/preppers mindset I guess lol).

I really enjoy that caliber. I was introduced to the AR platform (Armalite Rifle NoT Assault Rifle for those non-shooters) started with the AR10 so the first time I picked up the AR15..man that thing is light! So I've been shooting the 300blackout more now.

On a side note, I believe they are trying to ban knives now since the stabbing incident in Minnesota

.357 sig is my favorite caliber now!

Me as well lol. I've been buying it up at gun shows on the cheap. I have a sig sport with compensator. Very accurate.

Congrats man. Your going to have a literal blast with this car. Reality is this car needs very little to make it perfect, but I will follow your mods with interest.

IMO no need to mod ECU. It's on top versus buried in C class and made by Bosch. They have been doing this a long time. No worries.

Get the cats cut and tune and hold on brother.

yes..while I think it's "probably" ok without, I'm sure a heated electronic ecu isn't great for it. Try touching the ecu after a drive, it's almost unbearably hot

Personally, I wouldn't do that. Just because the ECU outer case is hot, doesn't mean its hot inside.

If anything, you may reduce airflow and its ability to cool.

I'm in a super hot climate, yet have no doubt that AMG didn't overlook this

Another thing, I've yet to notice any heat bleeding into the cabin, so if AMG wanted, they could have relocated it there.

And.... funny how the plastics and cables round the engine don't melt

I didn't think about that - also the fact that the battery is located in the hot engine compartment... and batteries are notoriously heat sensitive.
