Do Options Sell Out?

As I'm sure you all know by now, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to buying a car like this.

Can and do options sell out or go out of production/availability on a car like the GTR? For example, if you order a set of wheels or a carbon fiber option and the dealer says oh sorry those wheels won't be available because they're all sold out for that production run.

Yes they can, and often do especially at the start of production on a new car it seems. Items such as the carbon fibre rear wing on the GT R, or the Black wheels may very well be volume limited. Once a certain number of cars have been ordered/sold with a high demand option, MB's suppliers may have a difficult time producing as many more as might be needed in a timely fashion, especially if the factory is getting ready to produce a run of a particular model, like the GT R. I don't think that this issue occurs much when a car has been in production for a while. Whether that's due to the manufacturer having a better idea of how many of a particular option is getting ordered or whether the suppliers have had time to ramp up production, I'm not sure.

Options might not sell out per say but they sure can become unavailable or more expensive.

Once you lock in a build with a confirmed allocation, is it possible for options to become unavailable at a later date? Let's say, a month before it goes into production? Or while IN production?

Its variable, unavailable is very rare but you can be hit with delays.
for example the tsunami in japan a few years ago cut supply of some components and also some raw materials.
some manufacturers had to halt production cos of missing components others had to stop some paint colours because a missing chemical (rare paints are especially at risk yellows, oranges,etc...)

if your order was accepted then the option still exists but if it is more requested than the marketing estimations then you could be hit with production delays.
like someone alreday siad older the car lower the risk.

other than that its act of god time (factory fires, supplier bankrupcies, tsunamis, etc...)
what are you worried about?
which spec you,order?

Just got an allocation but wheels were not available. Everything else is. Just wondering if, as I approach the build date, other things can become unavailable. Nothing I can do about it. But would like to manage my expectations.

Spec is Selenite Magno, all the exterior and interior carbon fiber options. I care more about the carbon fiber than which wheels I get or which sound system. I'm getting aftermarket wheels either way. But it would be disappointing to get a call two months from now with, "sorry, that carbon fiber you wanted isn't available."

I live near Laguna Seca and another track. So I can track it if I wanted to. Not a "daily" driver. But weekends and whatnot.

I spec'd a GTC and it was a few grand less than the GTR I ordered. So I figured why bother with the GTC.

Are you in Europe? Can't get a cage here in the US.

Felicitations pour la commande de la GTR.
My only issue with GTR is that it does not come with the pano roof so the GTC would be it for me. Not an issue with you since you are not going to daily drive it. You are going to love that thing.

Yeah it’s usually wheel manufacturers that limit production. You hear all the time, that even regular AMGs wheels are few and far between. i broke 2 last year and ended up getting like new used takeoffs because there were no new wheels available on my CL 63. 2009!

Also, they limited interior GT options in 2018, when they realized you build a nicer GT for less.

Try a paint option like solarbeam yellow, Mercedes Benz wants $10,000.00 last I checked to paint a car that color. Options like Dynamic Exhaust used to be in the MSRP and now MB charges over $1000.00 for the option or like the heated cupholders, haha they now charge $250.00. I've given up figuring out the premium packages but hidden in those is more cost to us. The MSRP of the GT S has increased nevertheless for the same car since the introduction. I love the cars but the price just shoots north every year.

Not trying to start a flame war, just a few observations.
