Transmission Started Clunking/Lurching In Reverse...

Went out for a spin tonight in the GTR. Came home and pulled it in the garage and put it in reverse to line up the red bar on the back up camera with a marker in the garage as per usual. Let my foot off the brake and it started clunking/lurching. You could feel and hear it. Backed in and out a couple more times and it kept doing it. I then took the car out for another spin around the neighborhood and got on the highway. Ran it through all the different modes. No problems, no check engine. Came back and tried again - same thing. In reverse only. It seemed like any inputs to the brake on or off aggravated it. Turned car on/off and everything else one could think of. Same thing. Something is really jacked I think. Did hook up my OBD and there were no codes. So at this point, I'll get it in asap to the dealer. I'll try again in the morning, but I suspect it will be/do the same. If not - then I'll really be concerned. Wondering when it will happen again. Anyone else experience this before? I'll certainly keep everyone updated when I take it in. Just like I have on other issues.

Had that happen two times with the GTC going forward at slow speeds. I have to remind myself it is still a manual transmission and the computer is running the clutch. When it does it to me I realized it was actually my foot aggravating the deal. The first lurch causes my foot to shake which contributes to the remaining lurches till I take my foot off the gas pedal and start over.

True. What's strange though, is I did nothing different or out of the ordinary as to the way I usually drive the car. I'm going to take it out here in a bit this morning. Since it's cooled over night and see what happens. I suspect it will be the same. We'll see. I'll report back shortly.

I had this issue with my C63, it was the caliper sticking.

Rear brake caliper - makes sense. I do notice something a bit off with the brake feel. Can't really describe it, but I feel it because I know the car so well. This could very well be the issue. What did they do? Replace a rear caliper as the fix?

Car backed out of the garage this morning with no issues and I went for a nice 20 mile drive. Car performed flawlessly. Came back and pulled into the garage and the same clunking/lurching when put into reverse. I'll drop it off tomorrow at the dealer and follow up here with what happens.

In my case the caliper would stick after it got wet and sat for an hour or so. My mechanic said it was fine as long as I don't mind the gut-wrenching clunking noise once and a while. Mechanically nothing was wrong, it was just a bit rusty. You mileage may vary though. Yours sounds worse and my guess is that once the brakes heat up a bit it's then fine, which explains why you can drive and no problems, but once it sits and gets cold, then you start getting issues. Have the mechanic check it out and look at the calipers.

Actually, this morning when the car was cold - it backed out fine. My issue is when the car is warm and in reverse only. It may very well be the caliper is hanging up a bit in reverse and thus affecting ECU inputs to the transmission. However, If this were the case. I would imagine there would be a CEL of some sorts, but there isn't one. It will be interesting to see what it is. Hopefully nothing major. Dropping the car off first thing in the morning to the dealer tomorrow.

UPDATE: Played with it all last weekend and could not duplicate. Did it for me twice. Once that evening and the next day, then no more. Quite frankly, I'm surprised. I thought for sure it might be something major and would keep doing it. Shop foreman had it for two days and could not duplicate. He did find and do an engine/transmission software update. Car sounds ferocious on start up. You can turn it on and off as much as you like and there is now a very evident snarl/backfire. I'm talking very noticeable. Texted the shop foreman here's what he said.

Can you share the date of manufacture of your car? I ask because I just had my annual service, (A1) done last week and I was told there were no updates available. My car was made 10/18.

Thanks.

Happy to Bish. Do one better - here is a picture of the VIN sticker. Is that a typo? How was your car manufactured in 10/18? You've been here for a year. You get another one - lol.

I had this backing up issue on my 2016 GTS. I had a software update done recently and it has been gone since. Most definitely something was corrected in that realm.

You’re right! I was being an idiot. lol. My build date was 10/17.

Thanks for sharing your build date also. Interesting that at Service A1 one week ago I was told that there were no updates available for my car, and I did ask specifically.

Bish,

My C63S is getting stripes this morning - will post those pics later. Then gets picked up, and goes to the dealer to get my Valentine One wired in. I will ask the shop foreman and get the specifics on that software update for you and others and post it here later this afternoon.

That would be great, thank you.

Could you also find out exactly where the V1 is getting 'hard wired' to? I've been meaning to install one of mine but haven't taken the time to identify a switched hot lead yet. I always prefer the rear view mirror area, but haven't found any info.

I used the Valentine Savvy for one week, but after the car sat for about 8 days not being driven, the Li battery was so low I couldn't crank the car! Thank God I was able to re-charge it with the OEM trickle charger and I didn't ruin a $1,500(?) battery!

A switched extra ignition terminal in the fuse box. Like it was on my GLA 45. I'm having this done to my C 63S today. My GTR setup is lame. I did this on purpose, as I ordered an Escort iX and the Valentine One. This was done to see which one I preferred the most, and the winner is the Valentine. So I will order another Valentine and have that done to the GTR at a later time.

Spoke with the shop foreman on this software update. He said there is no specific release dates on these and when they hook up to the car it pops up by VIN that there is an update available. Apparently, it takes several hours to do as well. He also said, there is no specific mentioning of what it is doing and what the update actually is. He mentioned an example of one he did the other day (can't remember the MB model) and it now throws a CEL because the update took a particular sensor out of the calibration it was manufactured for. Thus, the fix is a new updated sensor as well.

With that being said Bish, perhaps on your service they didn't connect the car or have a reason to. May be worth going back to see and/or probe a little further. Seems like our cars are only a month apart in the manufacturing date. I would assume there may be one for yours also. Who knows.

Follow up. Since I see a new thread on a transaxle issue. This has only happened to me twice. Funny how once something weird like this happens. How you're always hyper-aware and on the lookout/paranoid - lol. Suffice to say I am of the feeling it was some how related to the electric brake sticking. Hence the lurching. Second time it happened - I fiddled with engaging/releasing the brake and it went away. Not really worried about it at this point anymore. Software update didn't do anything. Except this car has a nasty growl on start. Not just cold start. It can be fully warmed up and I can turn it on and off - doesn't matter. I mean it's really loud. Sounds cool though.

Bish: Since our cars we're built at right around the same time. Did you take your car in and was there an update for yours? Did anyone else have a software update? I think I will take a video of it starting so you can hear what I'm talking about. I can almost be convinced it's not normal. You can see above the shop foreman commented on it as well. Rather curious now I must say.

I had the car in for it’s annual service last November and there were no updates performed. I did ask also.

I had this happen to me today, twice. First time since buying the car two months ago. I was backing up fine, was easing because of a new narrow garage I was edging into, and all of a sudden it feels like surges then cuts in throttle. Almost like it was stalling or like a fuel pump issue. It actually made it so I had to stop trying to get into the garage because I wasn't comfortable I knew what it was going to do. No issues in drive and no issues when letting car idle normally in reverse or under throttle. Only when I was easing gas or brake. Hope it is temporary. Didn't feel like the electronic brake or calipers. I could see the RPMs jumping.

I had after market tune put on my GTS recently and the car seems to lurch every time I leave from from a stop or low speeds .. It does not have the same smooth start it did have... It started after I bought a ECU upgrade tune ? Anyone else notice a difference after a tune ?

Mine is post EC tune. It was the first thing I thought of, but, it hasn't happened the last 2 weeks since I tuned until today. It may be a fuel mapping issue, as every now and then in drive I sense the stall and lurch at low speeds...But DCTs can do that as the clutch engages. I plan to keep an eye and if it keeps happening I will flash back and try to isolate the tune as not being the problem.

Yeah...its not that. It literally pulsates RPMs while sitting there with foot on brake or gas. It's not normal and is a new thing. But yeah, thanks for the obvious.
