I have been at this tuning thing for over 45 years (back then a tuner was what you listened to the radio with), and I have never, ever been denied a warranty claim because of any modifications I have done. I have, had my ECU tuned, used piggybacks (my Ferrari dealer put in the piggyback a Capristo exhaust in my Calf T while it was in storage) and lately handheld tuners, (with my 4C a second tuned ECU), and handheld transmission flash tunes. I have used Open Flash, and have two Cobb units (for different Porsche's). There is not much I have not modified over the years, and have rebuilt brand new cars from the ground up (those I never brought back to the dealer). I prefer handhelds even if you may leave some power on the table using them, because I know where my stock tune is. This is more about your dealer, and your relationship with them. I tend to get to know (I have bought lunch for the service guys and bottles of 21 year old single malt for the service manager) the service department (the techs at my dealers know me by name and I am free to walk through the shop), since in the end they will determine what is or is not under warranty, There are some dealers that are truly anti mod, and if you have one of those I'd be careful, but they are not looking to deny warranty, all that does is loose them a customer. Stephen is right tuning is not for everyone, and as I have said unless you can handle the car in race mode without traction controls, more power would be a waste of money. I mean no insult but until you can, you have no idea how much power or what your car is capable of. I just bought a 718 Cayman which I am turning into a track car (my 43rd Porsche) and the ECU had to be sent to be unlocked before it can be tuned. I add exhaust, downpipe, short shift kit, wheels, etc. The Porsche dealer I bought it from knows this and is fine with it. Like I said this is more about the relationship you have with your dealer, but if you are risk adverse, don't do it.

carnut summed it up nicely. Even with a second ECU that is now mated to your VIN, if there is a large warranty claim, you bet that MB will be asking questions even if for some reason, they cannot see it on logs. Every circumstance is different and it pays to know and nourish the relationship with your local dealer.
