Vinyl Wrap Question

Planning to get my new 2019 Selenite Grey MAGNO XPEL wrapped in Satin (is this correct?), and was wondering if these vinyl pieces that come from the factory should be removed prior to applying the XPEL?

Yes. It must be removed. From what I had done and know, you don’t put clear bra on top of clear bra.

That's what I thought, but have never wrapped a car before. I made the (big) mistake of not wrapping even the front of my C63 507 Edition when I took delivery, and will never make that mistake again! Front end looks like it was sandblasted, after only 40K miles.

But on this same topic, are you guys able to wrap the big star disc with the distance sensor in it? Does it affect it?

Two quick things.
First...if the factory rocker protection film is in good shape...leave it. The XPEL will go right over top.
Second...you can definitely wrap over the front sensor as long as the film isn't metallic wrap film.

I had my entire car wrapped...even the emblem.

Thanks. I’ll leave the factory protection film on in that case. What’s the point in taking it off a brand new car? More opportunities for the installers to scratch the paint.

The reason why they may take it off is if they can't get the new layer of wrap/clear bra material to stick properly around the edges of the material underneath. Otherwise, it's just an aesthetic thing, since it won't look as seamless, but that is preference at that point.

Yes, it is possible to wrap over it without issues. I do it all the time.

Exactly, I think that was what I was referring to. When you place a large sheet of clearbra over it, it wont be seemless around the edges and it will form air bubbles. It wont look clean. You can however, remove it, place the clear bra, then replace or reattach that strip on top..this would work better esthetically IMO, but personal preference

.
I had it removed since I was getting the whole panel covered regardless. That small strip really doesn’t do much as people think. Especially in a car this low + sticky, rock slinging tires

The installer just put the Xpel over the top. No bubbles, etc., looks perfect. He said they did the same for other makes, etc.

Not true, I have multiple layers of PPF on a couple of high impact places on my cars.

More power to you. Not saying it can't be done. For a clean look and cosmetics, it's just not commonly done. Like I mentioned I think it will look better if you place a smaller piece on top of a bigger sheet for high impact locations, this would look better IMO. Like if you removed the small piece on the rocker, installed a large sheet to cover it, then attached the smaller piece over it. That way you can remove it and reapply if it gets beat up...

There is now a new version of Xpel that is apparently 10 mil thick for extra protection. Regular Xpel
is 8 mil and Suntek 6 iirc.

Anyone had this installed yet?

Yikes 10 mil is thick. Might be good for large flat spots like doors and hoods. Some of the contours on these front ends and splitters/spoilers have to be a nightmare for some of these installers.
