Yep, that's pretty much been my experience from people I know who bought a Model 3. I had one friend who put down a deposit, but it didn't do anything other than giving Tesla an interest free loan. The vast majority who put down a deposit on the Model 3 were waiting for the long promised sub $30k model that only recently appeared, so pretty much anybody who was willing to buy one of the higher end versions could simply order and get it. It's one thing to put down a deposit for a limited production exotic car to secure a spot, but on a car intended for the masses, even a $100 deposit makes very little sense. It's just a much lower bar to part with a $100 for a promise to eventually get the car, but really it's not gonna make a material difference. What will count is how many of them will actually translate to real sales. A lot can change in 3+ years.

Personally I am in the market for a truck, not an electric El Camino but something to pull my camper in the mountains, haul lumber and what ever else I want to. Tesla is selling to the urban crowd who may carry bags of mulch from Home Depot, not the rural citizens who use a truck and make the truck work.

From what I read the truck is aimed a 3 buyers. The largest with 3 motors and AWD Can Haul 14,000 lbs and go 500 miles between charges (which will likely be more 3 years from now).

I plan on waiting it out and see what happens. With 250-300k buyers there will be some deals to be had on the ones traded after the bloom falls off of the rose.

Also, it will be entertaining to see all of the manufacturers competing products roll out.

Towing is more than weight, it is wind resistance and braking. How much does this "truck" weigh? Can it handle a travel trailer that gets moved by a semi passing? Can it pull a mountain pass with weight in tow? The more stress on the electric motor the more energy it uses. It would be a very bad thing to run out of juice on a 6% + grade.

This is a suburban truck, like a Ranger and Colorado.

AMG GTS, Ford Raptor and Tesla Model 3 dual motor
We will see in 2-3 years if it's worth trading in my Raptor which is dedicated for desert use not towing. I need something to get me to my fishing spots.

Agreed. With how drastically temperatures and trailer weight affect electric range, I'd never personally buy an EV for actual truck use, such a hauling, towing, etc. The cyber truck also isn't going to touch the current work truck market, especially with the unavailability of parts for current Teslas, lack of shops that can work on them, and past quality control concerns.

I'd hope that Tesla is already aware of this, and I'm assuming are strictly planning to target their current customer base and hip suburbanites.

Man, I really hope the Raptor rumors are true, and that we get a Raptor model in the next gen with the gt500 v8.

This was in my YouTube recommendation today. Jason from EE did the math on the ability of the cyber truck to actually tow its rated load for a meaningful distance and it basically shows how it won't even come close to an F150 with today's battery technology even with some generous assumptions. Informative video.

So Elon Musk is hoping technology catches up with the hype -- or representations. Isn't that what got Elizabeth Holmes in trouble when technology never did?

Yes - seems like he is the P.T. Barnum of the modern era.

Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport?

Doesn't look road legal. Where are the rear view mirrors?

Scott:

The mirrors are cameras.

You need one of these with the battery powered off the road vehicle that is an option.

Happy Holidays.

Cameras are currently illegal.

In addition to my GT I just got an e tron. Totally different driving experiences, of course. But the e tron is a much better can than was my i8. So an off road battery operated car is in my garage. (I'm too friggin old to drive one of those small things.)

I was thinking you could go canyon trail riding.
with it. The truck is butt ugly for sure. But who knows what Musk will do to it in the next 2/12 years before actual launch.

I think once you get yours. It would make a nice photo shoot with your GTR. You could call it Beauty and the Beast. Which creates a misnomer because the GTR is beautiful but the Cyber truck is ugly as in the beast part. Yet the GTR is known as a beast because of performance. Hmm... might have to think of something else here.
