Burmester speakers not working?

Just bought a 2017 GTS with 1300 miles. It appears the large speakers in the rear cargo area and the footwells are not working. Anyone else experience this?

Do you mean the Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound system? If so, there are a number of adjustments available if you dive into the settings. Perhaps these are messed up. Just a thought. I have the system and it is fine.

Hi John,

Yes, the car has the hi-end Burmester. I've gone through the settings multiple times and I've read the owner's manual. Maybe I'm missing something?

Sorry. Either a previous owner messed with the wiring wanting to change things or a fuse or ???

I have the high end Burmester system as well. While I didn't experience no sound I did have a problem with the subwoofer in the trunk. It started to buzz on low notes. The dealer tried to adjust it and failed to eliminate the noise. They ended up replacing the subwoofer. If you are still on warranty I would take it to the dealer and let them figure it out.

After further examination, I found the speakers in the doors (near the footwells) are working, but again the rear cargo area speakers are not. Not even a buzz.

Sounds like either a fuse, or a blown speaker. Worth checking all the fuses before digging deeper.

It seems like it would be something simple like a fuse. I'll let you know tomorrow; dropped it off to the dealer this morning. Currently driving a rental.

This follow up post is made slightly off-topic due to frustration with the MB dealer located in North Palm Beach, FL...

Dealer states the rear speaker is only engaged in "Surround" mode. So I put it in Surround mode and listened closely. Just getting a buzz from the speaker. Problem not fixed.

Asked them to address a display message to reduce oil level. The oil & filter was recently changed and apparently too much oil was added. Dealer informs me they can't drain off excess oil; that a fresh oil change was mandatory, per manufacturer. I scoffed and declined.

For the oil level issue and the speaker, both could have been diagnosed over the phone saving me a 45 mile drive to visit the dealer. Instead, they keep my car for two days and put me in a rental, only to return my car with none of the issues addressed.

I had the same problem, except my sub came on at random times. Initially I thought it had something to do with the speed volume control but then I heard it happen while I was at a stop light. My GTS is currently at the dealer and I am in a rental, I will update status as soon as I get it back. I hope they fix it and not just say its some bs surround sound setting!

They are talking out their ***. Mine was serviced recently (MB dealer in the UK) and I had the same oil overfill warning. I took it to my local dealer who drained about 300ml out and now all good. They believe the first dealer hadn't fully emptied the oil before changing, there are 2 drain plugs, meaning whilst they put the correct amount in it was on top of some previous that remained.

An update to this thread. Met a fellow MBWorld member at the track last week. He has a 2018 GTC and it appears his rear speaker isn't working either. Is this normal for the subwoofer? Can I get a couple of forum members to listen to their rear cargo subwoofer to see if any sound is coming out of it? I took the car to the dealer this morning and they say it's working. I don't hear anything! Maybe I attended too many rock concerts in the 80's! lol

I had a problem with the wiring to the sub being cut due to being routed improperly when it was built. It took them a week to figure find and fix it. If the sub is working you know it so don’t let them give you a bs story.

Did that fix the issue? My car off the lot started doing that. I checked and its also the subwoofer in the trunk, it does so even at really low volume... love th car otherwise but a bummer having it to take it in after 2 days of ownership...

Yes, replacing the subwoofer solved the problem for me. It was a quick service item. They removed the defective subwoofer and installed the new one in about 90 minutes. Sorry you are going through this, but on the bright side this fix has nothing to do with the car's performance.

Hope it goes as well as yours! I assume they will have to order the part but it is what it is I guess! For the time being I'll just enjoy the engine sounds
I wonder if I should just tell them to flat out replace it or wait for diagnostics

Unless the buzzing is caused by a loose wire or bracket, I would request a replacement.

My buzz and howl was due to a cut wire intermittently shorting out. They fixed the wire and replaced the sub.

I have a roadster with the upgraded Burmester....where is the 11th speaker - I count 3 in the dash, two in the doors, two in the kicks, two in the rear behind the driver/passenger and a sub in the trunk. Burmester says its 1000 watts and 11 speakers. My sub is dead...going in this week for a fix.

Burmester has updated their site, so it’s easy to see where each speaker is:
https://www.burmester.de/en/Automoti...s-Benz/AMG-GT/

It’s 4 in the dash: 3 tweeters and 1 mid. The center console has 2 speakers with the upgraded Burmester.

I will check my sub - but it may be hard to tell if it’s working - the sub uses a lot of the car’s body as a cavity, so you’re not going to feel it vibrating.
The footwell speakers are the same... If you put your hand on them you likely won’t feel any vibration. That’s normal for low end drivers. Remember that vibration = distortion!
And the High End has special enclosures for the woofers: “To create optimum conditions for the woofers in the extremely rigid aluminum frame structure of the vehicle body, the frames are specifically sealed.”

Overall, the High End sounds incredible!

I played this track and checked my woofers and sub:

The sub is actually easy to tell if it’s working.

The woofers in the doors are harder to tell. But with your hand on the grills, especially the front lower part, you can feel a bit of pressure in time with the low notes.

You wouldn’t expect to feel much - again, vibration in the grill is bad, and it seems like Burmeister made steps to better isolate these woofers in the High End system. Plus, the sub and mid range are there, so these woofers are best called upper bass, which is not going to make a loud rumble.

Just off the phone with the local MB dealer to order a replacement Burmester sub-woofer. Mine has never worked, although the speaker is getting power. The price is around $800. Is there an aftermarket alternative that might be more cost effective?

After market won’t matched in level and frequency cutoff to the rest of the speakers. And there’s a special enclosure that likely won’t fit another brand of speaker. Honestly it seems like $800 is reasonable given that a home Burmeister system is $500K
is this the High End sub or the regular Burmeister sub?

I wasn't aware there was a difference between subs. I have the $5k Burmester system. Can I assume it uses the high-end sub?

Yes, there is a significant difference between the systems. Note the difference in the amp for the subwoofers, for example. Also note that the body enclosure is used to tune the speaker output.

"High End 3D" System
