The "backfiring" as opposed to normal crackling occurs mainly when downshifting from a pretty high RPM. And yes it does sound like a shotgun blast or maybe an M80.

When the weather clears I'll try to record mine so you can hear the sound. I have a 2018 GTC roadster.

Yeah, especially in Race, they can be VERY loud, and very comparable to a gunshot. I absolutely love it, but I can understand it being too much for some of our more subdued members.

On my car I can't seem to notice much difference in the exhaust sound between Sport+ and Race. It would be nice if there was such a difference, allowing the driver to have more control on the exhaust sound.

Closing off the valves during spirited driving can cause powertrain damage, which is why they don't allow this. I can technically close my valves completely at all times, with my EVM, but have been specifically instructed never to keep the valves closed over 3000rpm.

How true is this from the article?? "You will regret taking them on a trip lasting more than two hours. The suspensions are rock hard and very stiff. The high spring rates, aggressive camber, and multi-stage dampers are unyielding to road imperfections, no matter how minor. It hurts you. The heat pouring through the footwells will cook your legs and require the A/C to be blowing on the floor, even in fall weather with the roof off. That's because the giant engine and its two giant turbos nestled between the manifold are mounted behind the front axle, ending right at your feet, and then the giant transmission pokes out by your pelvis (hence the car's ultra-wide center console). This challenge of cooling a 1600-degree exhaust as it feeds these turbos nearly 20 pounds of boost pressure is not lost on Mercedes, but it's also not solved, either. Don't buy the AMG GT just because it's the most expensive car in the showroom. We're telling you now so you don't sell one after 500 miles."
I've seen the heat discussion in another video but heard people here say it's not true? Thoughts?

I took mine on 6+ hour drives. Nothing but smiles. Never felt any excessive cabin heat; the AC worked as expected. The suspension is quite firm, particularly with Dynamic Plus Package (aka AMG Track Package), but didn’t bother me, and I liked the sharpness of handling it gave. Saying it hurts sounds silly to me unless you’re old and frail and have back problems exacerbated by being jostled a bit. Someone who is frail and hurt by a firm suspension should get a non-AMG S class or SL instead.

Trying to get clarity on the ride quality myself given that I am "old and frail" I have be thinking about a SL but would prefer a coupe to a convertible but don't want a tiresome ride.

Katie22 who owns a GTC roadster, indicates that it is comfortable for long distance travel. She would know, her other means of long distance travel is to ride in the back of her S600 Maybach.

Interesting on the exhaust heat issue. I met a guy who had previously owned a 300SL gullwing who complained of the same thing with that car.

The car in the video sounded great.

I own a GTC roadster. I have not noticed any unusual amount of interior heat but the longest trip I have taken is 3 hours. I would think a heat problem would show itself in three hours. The ride is stiff even on comfort. But "stiff" is a subjective term and hard to describe. It is not like driving a commercial truck, some of which will compress your spine. It's just a normal sports car feel to me. My 911 TT was just as stiff, and my F430 pretty close.

The seat itself it thinly padded and not ergonomic to my frame. I need an additional seat cushion to make it tolerable for anything but a short trip. But I'm also thinly padded. YMMV.

I can appreciate the little backfire when downshifting and such but is it normal to have that loud of backfire on acceleration? I'm wondering if it was just a bad tuneup on the car we test drove. Not many of these models around to compare. Thought to ask here..
You were in Sport+ mode. In Sport or Comfort you don’t get the backfiring.
Note: the backfiring has been severely curtailed in 2020. It’s one of the best features of the car, in my view. It’s so ridiculously fun and addictive! You think it’s stupid, but my God is it entertaining.

I have owned a 2019 AMG GTC coupe for over a year. There is no excess heat, even on long trips, either in the cabin or the cargo area. Not on mine anyway.

Comfort is better than my 2015 C63 507 Edition Coupe. It’s actually more compliant than a 991.2 911 (see Motoman on YouTube’s review of the AMG GTC).

I do find the seats a bit too firm, and I can’t quite find the position to prevent my right thigh from feeling a bit cramped, although I think I’m sitting too far from the pedals. Overall, the driving position is perfect — but a little more cushion on the seat bottom would be nice!

Agreed. I enjoyed it in my 2018 coupe. No joy in my 2020 roadster.
