Its interesting to note that comparing the GTR and SL pretty much never happens and when it does, the SL ALWAYS falls short. Like always...

The GT R is a much more raw experience that takes true skill to master around a course. The SL and as such, I will assume the new GT, feels like a slot car, much more composed (IMO) than the GT.

It would be great if it turned out to be good, but considering the GT lineup was already heavy, adding substantial weight, hybrid system, no longer mid engined, and the lack of DCT, sounds like a recipe for a much worse car. It also signifies that it's just an SL with the GT badge.
I mean the successor of the SL being the R232 now, is no longer "super light" I guess it stands for "super/sport leight", it is way too heavy now and on top of that, no more hard top. So they got rid of the hard top and still managed to come up with this kind of weight. So in that sense the new SL is no longer a "true SL".
SL used to be about luxury cruising not performance cruising, that job is for the AMG GT. Not sure what MB is trying to do but I guess like others mentioned, they are trying to attract Porsche buyers by offering 2+2 but again not an SL thing but they did it anyway.
It probably was better for them to try to do one thing right instead of two things wrong at the same time.

That is not all.... First MB releases AMG exclusive SL, then they planned an SL Mythos. Two different extremes.

I’m willing to wait and see what AMG delivers as a next generation GT platform before I make my judgement.
If all AMG does is make a hard top version of the SL and call it a GT, it will certainly be a disappointment. I can’t imagine they would do that.
The GT is their sports car and it will need to go head to head with the 911 and all its variants.
While I don’t agree with everything AMG does, I doubt that they have missed this nuance.
Just because they share some architecture doesn’t mean they can’t be completely different cars.
We will see.

831 HP and AWD sounds like it could give a 911 Turbo S a run for its money.

I wonder how much more weight that will add, considering the new SL 63 has a curb weight of 4200 lbs. I believe the Turbo S has a curb weight of 3600 lbs, so it will be in interesting comparison.

I don’t see this to be that much different on the new GT.
The HP output is also just a short-term boost performance…
Weight has become the main issue on new MB’s. That can be offset with hydraulics and electronics.
We have that with our M8 competition. This car is great on the road and by the numbers kills most nonEV cars but the weight is ever present and simply less fun to drive than our nimble GTC.
These cars are not tossable, just like our E63s wasn’t. Competent but crap on the track.
