I'm manufacturer agnostic and Mercedes has certainly justified my position. I don't yet know what my next car will be, but I'm successful enough that it wouldn't be the new SL even if MB gave it to me for free. It's visually a huge nothing to my eyes.

I agree with the OP. This is a hard top SL that takes design cues from the GT; hardly a new GT - funny how they call it the GT II....it brings the Mustang II to mind when Ford tried to do the same thing Mercedes is doing here!
The GT, SLS, SLR were all born differently - SL might have been inspiration but none of these were the SL car with some bolted on bits.

Before: The AMG GT roadster and the AMG GT models were the same. New: Same with the next gen, at least to some extend. MB just chose to call the roadster the SL...

And was there a non AMG GT roadster back then? You see my point? Accept it Wolf. The GT is water downed and no longer dedicated.

Is the new "GT" going to have the faux backseat? If so, it's a mess. The front end of the new SL is not long enough for design purposes (or mid engine purposes) to carry the rest of the design. The SL looks disproportionate. If the "GT" is the same, why bother?

I am thinking we should give it a chance and see... I mean, still hopefully in reality it isn't that bad, we should know once it gets revealed and then when the reviews come out.

That this thing and the new coupe is a porker is unfortunate for everyone but that wasn't the point of the thread, was it?

Confused. Not understanding the non-AMG part. There is no non-AMG SL or SL anymore. Only an AMG SL and it is a 100% AMG car. But for now they are dedicated as the MSA platform is used only for those two cars.

It would be great if it turned out to be good, but considering the GT lineup was already heavy, adding substantial weight, hybrid system, no longer mid engined, and the lack of DCT, sounds like a recipe for a much worse car. It also signifies that it's just an SL with the GT badge.

The new SL is a 100% AMG derived design.
I have driven a GT, GT C, GT C Roadster, GT R, GT R Roadster, GT Black Series, and the new AMG SL...all of them hard and some of them on a race track.
In no world can I see the upcoming GT replacement not being a better car as far as driving dynamics go. As to looks, that's subject and we will all have our own opinions.
