Advice needed on potential purchase?

I am considering buying a 2017 CPO AMG GT with about 20k miles. I am pretty comfortable with buying due to CPO but other than reviewing service records is there anything, in particular, I should know that any of you wish you did before pulling the trigger?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Why a GT and not a GTS or a GTR from the same era?

One thing I always do is to check the inside of the tailpipe(s) for black exhaust soot by running your finger around the inside of the pipe (or, in the case of most AMGs, the flange surrounding the tailpipe). My theory is that engines that are not broken in properly will exhibit more blow-by which can be detected by black soot in the exhaust system. It's true that a through wash job could remove any such soot, it's unlikely that was the case. While I only have anecdotal evidence that this theory/test is of any value, it can't hurt. If the car does have a lot of soot deposit, ask for a compression test to be run (not a small job on these engines).

Thanks,
Being a 2017 and 7 model years old, you should check to see if all of the scheduled services have been done along with the safety check that comes with each service. Those records are available through the MB dealer.

Also, have the dealer do a fresh service along with a new safety check which will include remaining brake pad and tire thickness.

All of the fluids should be changed…transmission including a service, rear end, oil and ALL of the filters.

Good Luck.

Jerry

Are you being serious? 😅 soot is almost always from rich condition which is a safe way oem tunes vehicles. Lean = predetonation and knock which is bad (pulls timing and risks the engine). Rich is safe and fuel overrun is also why our cars pop and crackle on downshift and between shifts… where did you come up with this theory?

It is nearly impossible to judge the condition of an engine by tail pipe color in this day and age.
Back in the day, when gas still had lead in it and there were not nearly the amount of cleaning additives added you could look for that light grey/tan tail pipe color. Same with the plugs--- very difficult to read plugs now.

Make sure there are no open campaigns not performed, and ask if there are any TSBs that can be applied as part of the purchase process.

Good luck!
