The Best Tire Size for GTC 12" wheel! It's not what you think.
Hey guys, it was time for a new set of tires so I went to discount tire and had them put on a set of Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02. Looked like a great tire, great reviews with a 15K warranty (staggered). went with factory size, 265/35/19 up front and 305/30/20 on the rear per the door tag. Well I picked the car up and you could clearly see the rear tires were stretched out like hell to fit on that 12" rim. I always thought the tires that came on my car (pilot super sport) always looked a little rounded on the sidewalls too but this was painfully obvious, you could see a lot of the inner rim edge. So I did a little research, turns out the 305/30/20 by continental and other mfrs. per discount tire website is not even rated to be safely mounted on a 12" wide rim. They're only rated up to a rim width of 11.5". You can look at the spec for each tire on their website and it shows rim width specs. So, the guys at Discount Tire are amazing, they agreed with me and said in fact the 305/30/20 is not rated for a 12" rim, should have never been mounted. However, the Continental's didn't come in 315/30/20 so I went with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, same warranty just more $$. Now they look proper. And, the 315/30/20 IS rated to be safely mounted on a 12" rim. For what it's worth, the few days I had the continentals extreme contact 02's on I can say the felt terrific, handled great and the ride was a touch better than the michelin. If you have a regular GT on the 11" rim, they would be a good choice too. Not sure if this has been covered before but hope this helps. As always, Disount Tire is the best, they swapped the tires out no charge, love that company!
