Anyone in here taken "the perfect it" to their clk 430?

I own a 99 clk 430 that's black opal on black. I got the car through the biggest highline wholesaler in Florida and the price was awesome for the mileage. The lawyer that originally owned it never waxed the car so the paint was a little dry and had oh....30 something small chips.

I bought her and was able to compound 80% of the chips away because of how thick mb's paint is. I just recently took the driver side of the car to the next level. I bought a dewalt high speed electric aluminum/plastic buffer. I used a 3m "perfect it pad" and 3m "perfect it" paste. This is the same stuff that great body shops use after a car is painted.

Well, to make a long story short. Using this stuff will actually take all imperfections and ALL factory orange peel out of the paint. You have to follow up by giving her a good waxing. I like meguirs yellow #26 wax. It performs very well with a high speed buffer.

When I finish installing all of the lighting in my garage i'll have the whole car done within a few weeks. I'll post some pics

Hey Cani,

I just purchased a '99 430 yesterday and it has some paint chips on the front end as well as some surface scratches on the side. Keeping in mind that I am complete novice with paint, what would you suggest me doing about the chips on the front end and the
surface scratches? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Where to get touch up paint?

What paint do you touch it up with? Where do you get the paint?

I'm fairly confident that you can pick up a small bottle of touch up paint from any MB dealer parts shop.

I know you can from BMW or just about any other car manufacturer.

Hey NickV,

If you don't mind, what price did you get on your CLK? That's the same year and model a good friend of mine is looking for. Just trying to get an idea on price... how many miles has yours got?

Most MB dealers will give you a small bottle of touch up paint for free. If the parts dept. tries to charge you, get your salesrep. to get it for you. I do this for my clients all the time. Also, I know our Parts Dept. just started carring a new touch up paint pen. It has a large sponge like tip that makes it easier to appy the paint without the normal lump that will form. Check with your local dealer to see if they carries these or get the regular touch up. Hope this helps!!!

Hey Newsguy,
My car had 47,700 miles ~ I know it's kinda high, but I just couldn't pass up the deal. The dealer was asking $37, 995 and after hours, 6 to be exact, of negotiating I got it for $33,500. I think I made out pretty well. My brother was talking to the service guy about my particular car and they went over the entire history, turned out to very clean. My Dad and I were being very wishy washy about making a decision until the dealer asked me what I wanted it for. I told him $33,500, a number I thought they would never go for, he laughed and walked out. The sales manager walked in and asked if I was really serious, I of course said yes. The sales guy came back in and pulled the whole "If we get you this price will you buy today?" I said yes, he walked out and came right back in and shook my hand. Done deal!! I'm actually getting my windows tinted right now as we speak!! I love this car more than I ever thought I would!!
Tell your friend to look long and hard, he'll get one at a great price too!!

Nick,

Congrats on what sounds like a fantastic buy. I'm assuming you bought it from a Mercedes Dealer. Does it still have any remaining factory warranty on it? Also, did they give you an option to buy any extended warranty? Lastly, did you end up financing thought Mercedes? Or did you just pay cash? I just wonder if Mercedes has any financing deals on pre-owned cars right now.

Oh yeah,
Post pics of your new car, if you can!

Cani, did you go through the clearcoat? What you are talking about should not be dealt with by the novice.

Rotary buffers should only be used by extremely skilled people, even i am afraid to use them. Removing orange peel is something that should not be done to a factory paint job, its just to risky. You will have to wet sand the high spots to even out the look, some people have sucessfully done this however it will shorten the life of your paint greatly. Compounding probably will do almost nothing for both the paint chips and the orange peel. Post pics!

NickV,

Wow, 5600? That seems high. Did you take the warranty? Would that be powertrain or bumper to bumper coverage?
