First trip in 06 E320 CDI

I just had to share! I had an opportunity to drive a 06 E320 CDI and love it just as much as the older diesels. Incredible power, fuel economy, and amazing quietness. I drove it 80 miles or so and the car did not go over 55mph since it was still in its break in period. Although I never passed anyone on the trip, I was amazed with 37.8 mpg with the climate control and radio on. I cant wait to have it over 1k miles so that I can see what she really can do!

Speed is not limited to 55 MPH during break-in...

If it were, European Delivery would not be feasible.

The owners manual basically states, use "C" mode, avoid jackrabbit starts, and drive at legal speeds.

Anyway, since you now have some miles on your car you should continue to go easy on it until 1,000 miles. You have missed the opportunity to do a proper break in (during the first 50 miles).

When I say proper I mean seating the rings hard and properly at infancy. This technique is not discussed in the owner's manual.

The car was a Euro delivery, but was never driven except to the shipping area (less than a mile). Upon pickup the dealer strongly suggested not going over 55 for the first 1k miles. The last Diesel that was bought (1986) even had a tag as to break it in using the stated above method. As this is my parents car and is on loan due to car trouble for the week, I am trying to respect what they have asked. But perhaps this no longer applies!

I am interested in the proper way to break in a car as you suggested. Any information you could provide would be great!

First 1k miles

Just thought I would advise you guys that this is currently my fifth New Mercedes diesel - I have always just got in to the motor & just nailed it [With all my cars] Im possibly lucky that I have had no problems at all . Im in the truckling Industry & we never run the vehicle's on low revs when they are new or they end up not being able to pull at all.

I agree with the above statement. The rings will not seat properly if you baby them. When I picked mine up with 14 miles on the clock, I ran 90+ mph for the 70 mile trip home. A few WOT starts mixed in, but never ran it to redline. You gotta work 'em fellas.

It appears that you didnt read the owners manual, taking the car over 55mph is perfectly ok. The stipulation is that you dont exceed 2/3 of the engine's RPM's in any gear, thus, you can safely take the car to ~110mph at top speed. I was told not to take the car above 3500rpm when I picked my car up from the factory, however, I kept it less than that. 3,000rpm = 100mph which I did at extended periods of time during my 2nd tank of fuel. I have yet to get better than 30mpg on any tank (5th so far), so I have to call BS on the 37.8 you claim.

Diesel Fuel Economy

Remember, the difference in the gallon between the Imperial Gallon and the US Gallon is substantial. So the price needs to be adjusted somewhat.

Europe usually uses liters or Imperial Gallons. Imperial Gallons are considerably larger than US Gallons.

we're not lucky, we just don't use exorbitant fuel taxes to fund our governments socialistic programs like your government does

Yesterday I drove back with an 82 mile return trip. I called the dealer to make sure I had heard him correct with the 55mph deal, and he stated was correct. I know several of you have suggested other ways to break the car in, I do appreciate your input. Since the car is not mine, I had to respect the wishes of the cars owners (parents) and abide by what the dealer suggested, regardless of it was correct or not.

As for fuel economy, the car did 35.7 mpg. I think it shows how even the same road can produce very different results depending on weather, temperature, and perhaps some of the elevation changes on the route of the road. It was a warmer and perhaps different winds as the cars interior settings were left alone. Traffic did not seem to be an issue either way.

Thanks for the reminder on how expensive fuel is in Europe. This summer I will be visiting Germany, Austria and Italy and will hate the higher fuel costs but I will enjoy the roads and lack of SUVs!

what makes you think that there are no suvs driven in europe?
while suvs may not be as prevalent in europe as in the US, there are plenty of them there, mini vans too.

Based on my experience there are a lot less SUVs in Europe. That was what I was trying to convey. It seemed to me that there were many small cars and some vans, especially those pickup truck/van things. I have enjoyed driving the Autobahn without so many SUVs. Then again, I live in NC and it seems like everyone has an SUV. (Nevermind when it snows they all end up in the ditch!).

Talking

Just been from Aberdeen in Scotland to Manchester in England + return and my motor was according to computer 39.06mpg , considering most of the journey was spent between 80 and 90mph plus I dont really see any need to complain . Had I been a good boy say 56mph [Uk Govmt test speed ] I wonder if I would have got mid forties mpg

Happy as a pig in S****

We very rarely drive the speeds you get to drive (>100mph!) on a fairly regular basis I'm sure. Driving less than 70mph or less on a trip here in the USA vice travelling at your speeds makes a huge difference in mileage! I'm not saying we wouldn't want to!!! Lived in Europe for 6 years and loved the Autobahns and Autostradas!
