1984 300D with no power
recently purchased a one owner 84 300D this car is like brand new.
I have never driven one until now,really surprised with the take off power
(it has none!).It also has a very firm shift.Could this be a 5-speed taking off
in second gear?What about the firm shift? Cruise performance good.

Congrats on the purschase! These old diesels do have a firm shift, they are not as smooth as a modern tranny. The car starts in 2nd gear and is a 4spd. You can make it start in 1st by shifting into L then back to D. When you stop, it will start in 2nd again. Hope this helps!
