check your car
Maybe its the fuel blends for the different parts of the country. I just drove 150 miles round trip (80% highway) in the MD/VA/DC area and I only got 31 mpg. I took the same route home as I took going so I could compare apples to apples. I got about 30.6 mpg going and 31.2 coming back. Very few stops involved as I said 80%+ highway but hilly (Northern VA / Loudoun Co./Fairfax). I got the 31 after changing the air filter since that was the purpose of the trip to go to HBL Tysons Mercedes to buy a new air filter ($40). Oh yeah I even bit the bullet and drove 65 mph both ways . So explain that.
P.S. it was 95 -102 degrees and I am rolling on 19" with no passengers and AC on with windows up.

You need to check out your engine for fuel leakage etc.

Mileage Update
Here is an update after 4500 miles (5 weeks)
Best mileage is on my way to work mostly at 80mph (65miles) highway and 30mph local (11.5miles): 32.8mpg
Same trip in the evening; traffic: 29.8mpg
Overall 462 miles consumed 14.649 US gallons (at fill up today)=31.54mpg (US)

I've been keeping a record of miles driven and fuel consumed by my 2005 CDI since January of 2005 (at which time the car had 17454 miles on it). Fuel economy since then until the present has been 37.7 MPG over 30648 miles. My best tank has been 43.55 MPG, and worst tank was 28.95 MPG. Longest distance driven on a single fill up has been 850 miles. The car has the OEM 16 inch wheels and the original Michelin MXV4+ tires, which I keep inflated to 40 psi. The tires are rotated every 6500 miles. I keep the A/C on auto and set at 72 F. Most of my driving is during warm weather when the A/C would be cooling the interior.
Most of my driving in this car is long highway trips, and I stick to the posted speed limit (usually 65-70 mph, but can be 75 mph out west.) I've noticed that in addition to speed, my mileage is sensitive to wind direction, whether it's raining or not (rain hurts fuel economy), altitude (higher altitude improves economy,) and possibly fuel quality.

Mercedes just announced today the specs for the first Bluetec passenger vehicle for Europe. The E300 Bluetec is to retain the same consumption as the European E320 CDI of 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers (combined city and highway, NEDC test cycle). This translates to 32.22 MPG in US numbers. I suspect the European Bluetec utilizes a different rear ratio of 2.47:1 instead of the 2.65:1 used on the US version, which may explain the slightly better overall consumption figure there.
I put a blurb here: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/diesel.html

If I drive sanely I can squeeze 32 mpg out but I have to make a effort at the very end of the trip to not accelerate too hard from a stop sign in town or I lose 0.1 mpg at each stop sign.
I'm thinking of placing my factory 16" wheels on the car for the winter anyway so I will see if that helps my mileage then.

MPG is up
I just crossed 5000 miles in my E320 Bluetec in exactly 6 weeks and mpg increased immediately while I was driving to 34+ mpg from around 30 mpg on the way home today. I was not aware of a Break-In setting in the car.

Yeah but your in Texas (flat land) I'm in the trifecta of Northern VA, W.Va, MD, DC (hill country) where its constantly up hill and down hill even though I drive 80 miles one way everyday.
