W210 Loud and Getting Louder
My '97 W210 diesel engine is pretty loud...and seems to be getting louder. I detect that the engine is not running as smoothly anymore. Does anybody have a suggestion as to the cause and the fix? Could it be the grade of diesel (only #2) that I have been using? Maybe I am just getting older (turn down that noise!
)
Thanks!

How often do you change your oil?
Did you check the exhaust system? Hole in the muffler?
A 10 year old W210 diesel has a lot of life in it yet if taken care of.

I have 168k on the engine and I change the oil about every 3000 miles. I don't think it is a problem with the muffler. That end of the car is pretty quiet. It is what is under the hood that is making all of the noise. I'm just wondering if it is extraordinarily loud.
Thanks!

If you want to keep the car take it to a good mechanic or MB. It can be your hearing.

Info you're providing is very vague. Could be a number of things... Narrow it dow to where in teh engine compartment it may be coming from. It's probably you're serpentine belt shock.

What type of sound is it? Knowing the type of oil you use would help. If it's Synthetic (M1 5w-40) or a high grade oil we can probably rule out lifters. Ever checked your timing chain (stretch, etc)? Injection timing, injectior pop test?
