I'm still trying to figure out what Diesel chip tuning van PSI idea is supposed to mean.

Diesel chip tuning, obvious.
van PSI idea, huh?

I see lots of pretty decent diesels on E-Bay at good prices. Is it advisable to buy ones without the turbo? There are a few 1998 and older 6 cylinder ones like that. Are they difficult to modify?

The non-turbo ones are good for economy but thats it. They aren't built for the extra stress of a turbo.

I just don't get what (drugs) was going through MB's R&D department for them to sell a non-turbo diesel car in the 90's.

What is the difference?

Typically in Chevy and Ford aftermarket gasoline V-8 cars the way to get more power is to put in a new crankshaft and bore out the cylinders. I have never read about this method in diesel engines. Is there a good reason behind this? The stroking of a Chevy 350 to 383 is a good example.

There is no substitute for cubic inches.

Thats because there are no compatible engines to swap with.
About the only ones you could do that with is the early 200/220/240 engines.

I thought it was due to the practice of coating cylinder walls with liners (iron?) in newer MB diesels. Obviously the cylinder liners will be destroyed in the process of boring out the cylinders and a new MB crank will cost big bucks. Transplant as you suggested will be the simplest solution.

Your car had the modified "socketed computer" that enables you to use several different chips but I still do not know if what you did can be repeated with the W211 computer.

Any comments?

On the newer (VW) diesels, he simply flashes thru the OBD port. No more socketing, that's labor intensive. The process takes all of 5 minutes.

I really haven't asked him what's available, if anything, for the newer (MBz) cars. I'll see him in Aug...will ask.

Thanks.

I am quite satisfied with the power and torque of the standard E320 CDi though bigger and more are always better until economy suffers.

Highway driving is the best for a diesel car. Fast and cheap.

What is the torque-power numbers for your car?

well, he suggests a gain of 25 hp and 50 ft*lbs. I think those values are understated. My father's got a 1998 diesel...there's a night and day difference between his car and my car

We attempted to dyno a chipped 1998 last year, but had no luck. We couldn't get the traction control completely shut down

It sounds so exciting. 226 horses and 419 pound foot.

These are V-8 numbers until recently. If economy is retained this is absolutely magnificient. Is your friend into reflashing or tuning box?
