350 BlueTEC engine specs

I was at the Frankfurt Auto Show today and noted the engine specs on the 2010 German spec E-Class 350 diesel were 170 kW and 540 Nm.

Now if my calcs are correct, that equates to 228 HP and 398 lbs-ft of torque...somewhat different from the US pre-production diesel E-Class specs being thrown about in the various trade journals.

Also different from the 2010 350 BlueTEC specs listed on the MBUSA web site for the ML and GL.

Any of you diesel gurus know if the European version does make more power? Or maybe the US version is detuned a bit or otherwise constricted to comply with our pollution standards? Or is there some other difference?

Different pollution standards. Europe is retardedly focusing CO2 "emissions" while the US is focusing on particulate and NOx emissions.

Understand that the cars labeled 350 have the SAME displacement engine as V6 diesel cars labeled 280 and 320. That displacement is 29xx cc. It's all in the tuning.

I guess I thought that was well understood but thanks for reminding folks. And yes, the sign had the displacement listed as 2987 cc.

Ergo, the question about the reason for the HP difference since the engines are the same displacement.

It is undoubtedly about US emissions. Every emissions "upgrade" causes a downgrade in power. I take it the EU spec does not have a soot trap?

On a seperate note, do any of you Euro guys run bio diesel in your new generation engines?

Only up to B5 can be used. More will cause expensive damage.

350cdi is the same engine as the 320cdi but there are some diferences, like new piezzo injectors and new "admission" wich components I couldn't figure out yet! I think its only ECU map and some EGR mechanical differences.

I had the exact same questions some time ago and I posted somewhere in the W209 section, before I bougth my CLK320cdi
