1985 300D ignition switch won't turn

Help,
My 1985 300d ignition switch won't turn all the time. The key works fine in the door every time so I assume that's not the problem. It works in the ignition most of the time but sometimes it just won't turn at all. Any ideas on how to fix it? If the ignition switch need to be replaced, what would be the procedure? Is it a major job?

Have you tried relieving feedback pressure from the tires on the steering wheel?

That's very helpful. Ya I tried that. I also checked the muffler bearings and the windshield wiper fluid. That didn't help either.

It's 25 years old and has worn out and failed.

Get a new one from your dealer.

Instead of being a smartass, try to realize he is asking if when the lock won't turn you have tried turning the steering wheel and the key at the same time. When the steering lock in engaged, sometimes the return force from the steering system (rubber of the tires flexing) can pinch the column lock and make retraction of the pin, and turning of the key, impossible.

I realized what he was saying a few hours afterwords. I apologize for being a smartass but the way he worded it wasn't clear and I thought he was being a smartass. But yes I had already tried that with no help. I've ordered a new tumbler and key from the dealer. Right now were leaving the key in it and not turning it all the way off so changing it out should be a breeze with a paperclip.
