new diesel models
I just bought a 2010 BMW X-5 diesel. It is still too new to be certain, but I left the dealer in Lincoln and drove home 50 miles, and got 4 mpg better than the sticker predicted! Again, about 40% or more better than the gas version.
Please MB, make an E Class diesel that is a 4matic!!!!!!
And I would not mind at all, getting that smaller 4 cyc version that is currently only in Europa. The stats sound more than fine!
In Nebraska a rear wheel drive car is simply not practical. So please a 4matic diesel!

They just don't send them to the USA because it's another drivetrain, hence another expensive EPA certification, and MBUSA thinks sales won't be enough to recover the expense. We'll see about W212, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
The 4-cyl diesel is coming for C-class and GLK (which is a C-class), but not likely for any larger models unless you count Sprinter.
The new 4-cyl diesel (OM651) is offered in three states of tune, and the one called "250" indeed has twin, sequential turbos.

I agree that auto diesel engines are becoming too complicated. My last little1994 Peugeot diesel just had an electric solenoid fuel shut off V/v & that was all the electrics it contained. It suited me fine , gave no trouble & averaged 46 mpg ( Imperial). I have maintained my own vehicles for 46 years.
But what the hell can the consumer do with all the electronics in cars today ? . I do not intend to hide under a log ,winge & become a dinosaur. I have bought a OBD Code Scanner & a CD containing info all my vehicles electronic modules. I hope to learn how to manage it all.
I reckon with your vast mechanical experience you could become an expert in the new technology & give us all the benifit of your experience.
