Looking at an '82 300TD

I've been looking at this car for a while and I'd really like to buy it. The only problem is the rear suspension is sagging bad, so i'm thinking the self leveling system is probably shot. Should this be a deal breaker, or is it relatively easy to fix. I could do the work myself, and aside from that everything else on the car is mint. Maybe someone can link me to a thread that's covered this? I've been using search but I want this confirmed. Thanks

Yes.

The struts are over $500/ea, the accumulators are $120/ea, the pump is over $1000 and the level valve is over $500. The SLS is a system that needs to be maintained in good condition with the correct fluid at all times or it gets expensive quick. But when its working correctly its well worth having.

I got one of the W123's that I had been looking at! It's a White wagon with 194k. A little rust and it isn't perfect, but it's going to be my commuting car to school 100miles/day. Here she is

Seems like the ride is more harsh than it should be and the rear end does not lift up with a load. Also, the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir is oily and black. Does this mean the pump is toast? One side seems to sag a little bit lower than the other so i'm assuming that would be a bad pump. I've done some searches but haven't found a clear answer. I keep hearing how everyone is raving about the sls system so i'd really like to feel it!

It means the entire system will likely need rebuilt due to neglect. $$$$$

Good to know, thanks! I have to admit I am pretty disappointed but I knew this was a possibility before I bought the car so I'm not really worried.
