1985 190D or 1985 300TD?

I am looking to purchase a 1980s MB diesel and have been looking around for a while. I test drove and inspected a couple of vehicles this weekend and would like to hear some opinions on the different models.

85 190D with 219k miles
-excellent condition
-very slow vehicle
-great fuel mileage

85 300 Turbo Diesel
-fair condition
-can not find reliable information on expected fuel economy
-bullet proof engine

I am looking for a commuter car to pile the miles on and get 30+ mpg. I will average over 30k miles a year with this vehicle. I have done a lot of research but am interested in knowing a few more things about these cars. What is the expected reliability of the engine in the 190D and the car in general? What can I expect for fuel economy in the 300 Turbo Diesel?

Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie!

Between the two, I woulld prefer the the 300TD just a great car. They are both going to be pretty good on fuel economy. The 300 TD is just an icon.

Apples and Oranges

Comparing a sedan to a wagon is not the best idea, but at least you stated your goal.

The 190D would be the better commuter vehicle for one person hands down. Better fuel mileage (low 30's town, high 30's highway), newer technology, much better ride and handling, minimal engine maintenance (hydraulic self adjusting valves v. 300TD you must do each fall), much better cold weather starting, much quieter, the list goes on. I have owned both chassis.

The only advantage I see to the 300TD is image- lots of chrome trim. If you do not need to haul stuff, no need for that thing. Fuel mileage high 20's town, low 30's highway. It is a solid body.

The 190D 601 diesel engine does have a weakness for possible blown headgasket v. the 300TD which does not have that potential problem. The 300TD engine is all iron; the 601 is an iron block and aluminum head, so different expansion/contraction and possible blown gasket at Cylinder 1- oil is dumped into #1 and it smokes blue like crazy. An easy replacement.

My 190D is still fun to drive around
