96 E300D Poor Gas milage

It's a 96 E300D non turbo, automatic

Currently I'm getting 14MPG(16l/100km) in the city, driving gently, engine seems to run fairly well in city and on highway, I just got the car and I'm new to diesels....

I did notice air in the tube leading from heat exchanger to the pre-filter, so I ordered a kit of Viton O-Rings(heat exchanger looks fairly moist). I also notices that the outside of the IP seems moist.

When I bought the car it wasn't starting due to the K40 Relay problem, I re-soldered as discussed in this forum, and it seems to have cured the problem. Previous owner brought it to the dealer so the car has a New Pre-Filter, Main Filter, Air Filter and Battery...

Any help greatly appreciated, Thank You.

It seems to me that you must be leaking a lot of fuel onto the ground to cause such a loss of mileage. I get 22 to 26 around town on essentially the same car. Do you park on a hard surface where leaked fuel would be noticeable? Diesels basically burn any fuel injected into the cylinders so there is no such thing as "running rich" like you can see on gassers. If one of your cylinders was so low in compression that it was not firing you would have a cloud of white smoke following you. Assuming there is no smoke under normal driving, you must be leaking the fuel.

I am leaking fuel, but in minute quantities no dripping one the ground, I can smell it when I open the hood though, but from what I've read in other posts, even people who had fuel dripping or leaking from injector lines did not get such poor millage... So I'm assuming there's something else at play, I can't do nothing to remedy the leak right away, because I'm still waiting for the O-ring kit...
Thank You.

A fuel leak is the ONLY possibility for such poor mileage unless the engine is smoking very heavily.
