I'm a new to the site and need some assistance from people who know about old MB's. I am considering buying a 1970 220d, looks in very nice shape and I will be test driving it. However, I plan on using this as my commuter car 7-8 months out of the year and then storing it for the winter.
Is it practical or smart to use this car as my primary commuter car, if it's in good shape? I know they get decent gas mileage, however I'm not sure if it's a wise decision for me to purchase it without getting a lot of insight into what I'm actually getting myself into. Any suggestions/assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

They are dog slow. As long as you don't mind not being able to out accelerate an 18-wheeler, it might be ok. I think that car had 57HP? That one may have had even less considering it's an 1970. Not nearly as many things to go wrong with a 70s model, but the engine might take some constant vacuum adjustments (just guessing here).
