Feedback on 1990 350 SDL turbo Diesel
Hi all,
I'm looking into purchasing a 1990 350 SDL turbo Diesel that is in immaculate condition for $9,500 and I'm wondering how reliable the engine is. From what I've read, there are issues with the engine/cracked heads.
My mechanic gets in all kinds/years of Mercedes, Is it better to wait for a newer diesel (94 or 95)? It seems like diesel engines in older Mercedes are more durable and better quality overall. I also like the heavier feel to the older cars.
My current daily driver is a 1980 300 sd that I absolutely adore and it's been a real workhorse. That car is in the shop due to someone rear ending me last weekend.
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Out Of Control!!
In my opinion the only downside is that the cars need many special tools to repair.
Plus you need different diagnostic equipment, maybe the HHT will analyze the control modules, I just do not know as I have never done one Other than that it's a great diesel!!

The Cylinder Head issue was addressed by Mercedes, Check the casting numbers under the #2 intake port.
The desired last numbers are 15,17,20 found on the later model 603.
The older deisel requires no electronics or even a battery to run, This car can be push started n 2nd gear. A real survivor veichle that is easy to maintain. The electronic version requires all of the above but runs quieter and smoother requiring the same maintenance.

How many miles on the engine? I have read bad things about the 350 as well. Maybe better off looking for a nice 1987 example and also save some cash? I believe the engine issues with the 350 also carried into the W140s?

The 1987 will be 25 years old with a lot of heartache unless you fid one in a barn some where with no miles. The 603 engine is Good with the right cylinder head, Most have moved onto the later 606 turbo. These are electronic with little problems, A very desirable turbo diesel.
I was looking for a later CDI v6 and stumbled accross a had to have AMG. The CDI 6 has a strong resale value as well.
