0w30 oil change observations

i just changed the oil in my 09 gl320 bluetec and used the mercedes recommended 229.52 as shown here>https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_223_2.pdf

only 7000 miles on the last oil 5w30 amsoil but it has a 229.51 spec so no more of that i guess

paranoid of the engine sludge issues in the bluetec reported here

i won't go 10,000 miles on this mobil 1 oil either, probably 6 or 7 thousand

amazing how black the oil gets and when i poured in the new oil and pulled the dipstick it was instantly black

i thought these newer diesels would not pollute the oil as much with the high pressure injection (23,000 psi) and computer controlling but i was wrong

anyway i hope this 0w30 oil holds up according to mercedes and mobil

Steve

Good thinking 6.000 miles. Oil is cheap , sludge expensive.

Thx for posting, Fireman. As if I wasn't anxious enough already, now I'm panicking and waiting for my auto shop to open so's I can;

- Change the oil and filter with 20W60 CK4 oil
- Run DPF fuel cleaner (on every tank, my head's spinning)
- Fill up the AdBlue reservoir, which I'm sure has never been done in the 10k mile lifespan of the truck
- Remove the bellypan (Edit; Not doing this, the alternator is down low in this thing. A couple of puddles and new alternator...)

Gonna be a busy busy day.....

Both the bluetec and CDIs are the same engine, just different emissions system. The subtle differences in oil spec is related to this and not related to sludge. This the difference between the 229.51 and 229.52 specs.

You definately want to use the correct oil, first because an inappropriate oil for a diesel will not be able to manage the crap that gets past the tings and into the oil. Thus is an inherent characteristic of diesels because of the higher compression and combustion properties. A different injection system will not change this. Secondly, because you don't want to foul the emissions system with the combustion products of the oil - diesels typically recirculate crankcase vapours into the intake and some oil makes it into the cylinders.

The MB branded 229.52 is competitively priced, so play it safe and stick with that on a Bluetec.

Peter,

You would be very unwise to put the 20w60 oil in your MB. The article recommends oils that are compliant to MB recommendations. Why do you not use them?

Well, I only read these posts after changing the oil. Went with a CK40-rated oil. Shell Rotella 15W40 for the summer. Old oil was blacker than the ace of spades after only 10k miles.....

Lube oil from a diesel engine will be as black as a witches tit after 100 miles or less. .

Hope it works out for you.

Sadly, I haven't had the pleasure of witnessing a witches ****, so I can't agree/disagree LOLOL

I'll tell you this though, I'm sure you're right. I had the oil draining for an hour or so, yet the dipstick still showed black oil when I refilled it.

PS: The oil had print which stated something to the effect that "this oil will not void manufacturers warranty"

Still a diesel, yes, but completely different engines and environmental (pollution) controls. The cdi is a straight six cylinder and is rock solid.

I do not know where you are from, but here in the United States, the 2006 e320 diesel is a I6, as I have one and can surely tell the difference between a straight and V six motor. I think we are a year behind European countries.
