Exhaust Gas Analysis
Hi, My W211 E-270Cdi is due for Exhaust Gas Analysis. The mileage is 160k (km) It was due in Mar 2016 but dealer didn't do the analysis and set the next due date as Feb 2017.
Could someone let me know how these analysis are performed? I know this much from reading the forums that they check Air to Fuel ratio in exhaust gases (about CO2 or NOx contents) and the gases are not running too rich with fuel or air.
Since I wasn't aware of this during the last checkup of Exhaust analysis, could someone please let me know:
- what is your experience with these analyses and what are the ideal values I should be looking at?
- Can an independent mechanic with Star software be able to do it?
- Do I really require to have these done?
Many Thanks
My Car doesn't smoke and is in perfect condition

What country is it?
In California gasoline cars are check for smog emission since "forever" (I think like 50 years) but even smog control for diesel become mandatory as well about 7 years ago, nobody is putting smog probe in diesels. They are only check for EGR operation and original components.
I just had smog check on my SL500 with gasoline engine and 193,000 miles on it.
It pass the smog within 10% of allowable units. That only shows how well the engine fuel distribution does it work.
In the past - older gasoline Chevrolet would never pass the smog without some carburetor work.

My country doesn't require cars to go through emission testing. The query was more for proper maintenance of the car and whether skipping it would do any harm to the car?

MB as manufacturer doesn't require any exhaust testing at least I have never heard about it and I chat on several MB forums.
Modern engines are pretty much self-testing, so the mentioned results of my SL smog test did fill my curiosity, but I drove/drive diesels for decades with no exhaust test and I am fine with it.
Bottom line, unless your dealer can produce some kind of WIS that such test is recommended, I will think they try to take your money for unnecessary work.

In EU car is provided with 'certificate of conformity', where manufacturer defines which emission level car is certificated (in addition of many other technical scpes). National MOT define value limit of their own, which car should pass depending their age/type etc, and it varies a lot which values are monitored if any.
