24,000 miles - Check Engine Light On
So i was driving along happy as a clam, and the dreaded check engine light came on. Initial thought was maybe the gas cap since i filled up yesterday but it was tight and secure, light still on. Engine performs geeat, no weird noises or anything. It fires right up and i dont feel like there is any issue with the direct injection. The car has just under 24k miles.
I called my dealer and they gave me an appointment for Monday. The earliest i could get it is this Friday. Should i be worried and ask them to try and get me in sooner? The car feels fine. Any ideas what it can be ?

Don't know if this is your first diesel...or first *recent* diesel....but my experience with my three diesels (including my Bluetec) is that CELs were almost always connected with the DEF (Adblue) system.Seems to me that you should take advice from your dealer regarding the potential seriousness of this matter.I'm told that when the CEL is red it indicates a potentially urgent problem,when it's yellow...not so serious.

Don't know if this is your first diesel...or first *recent* diesel....but my experience with my three diesels (including my Bluetec) is that CELs were almost always connected with the DEF (Adblue) system.Seems to me that you should take advice from your dealer regarding the potential seriousness of this matter.I'm told that when the CEL is red it indicates a potentially urgent problem,when it's yellow...not so serious.

It is usually connected to the emissions system, which on the diesel is almost always the adblue system. I wouldn't panic, just take it in.

The vehicle is under warranty, whats the point of diagnosing it myself ? Let the dealer deal with it, thats why i paid for a new car. But i just wanted some opinions on the matter. Thanks

But think about it.
CEL can be lot of things. Some of them harmless like burned GP, but sometimes acting MAF can destroy your cats and particulate filters.
Do you think dealer will replace few thousands worth of parts on their own ?

Why did you start this thread in the first place?
But think about it.
CEL can be lot of things. Some of them harmless like burned GP, but sometimes acting MAF can destroy your cats and particulate filters.

And to address your question if the dealer will covers the parts and the answer is of course they will, that is what a warranty is about. Soon as the light came on i notified them and the earliest they can get me in was Friday so if something happens to go wrong before i take it in to the dealer that would be covered as well. So no worries

Even if you come back here with 1 of possible reasons for CEL, how that is going to help guys with 2000 other issues and the same CEL ?
Than when I have 0 faith in dealers honesty, you seem to put too much in it.
Chances are that your driving the car till Monday WILL add to the damage.
Dealer will have the option to play dirty card that it is your fault that cats and filter got damaged.
It is not what you know that can hurt you.

Dealers want to fix cars, we get paid when the repair is done under warranty same as if the customer has to pay for it, only change is the money comes from MBUSA. If your belt breaks, and it knocks an intake temperature sensor out of the intake manifold and cuts the harness off, guess what, we replace all of that as consequential damage. We could say "oh you should have heard the belt coming apart and stopped the engine". The reality is, the actual failure is covered, and whatever damage it caused is covered. Unless you drove through a puddle or did some sort of outside damage, if the SOURCE of the failure was a covered part, then all the resulting damage is covered.
Most bluetec faults are related to adblue heaters/metering, which are non-critical, only there for emissions reasons. Yes we've had people drive the car like that for weeks and plug up a particulate filter, that customer is gonna get a new filter too under warranty. That's the way it works.

Im going in Friday morning not Monday, so im only going to drive the car to and from work today and Thursday which is 40 miles a day. So 80 miles in all. But i agree that it had something to do with the DEF emissions. The service guy said its probably nothing serious and even wanted to schedule me for Monday. Which means this might be a common issue for them on the diesels and he already has an idea of what it is. Anyways ill let you guys know what the problem was and how fast the dealer got it fixed for me with a new E class loaner that i had the Service advisor set up for me

I just dropped off the car so im not sure yet what the code was but im sure they ill let me know today or tomorrow. Whipping around a little C class cabroilet for a few days. Ill keep you guys posted as to the code and solution.

I just got the call back and it seems that the fuel pressure is too high for some reason, they are going to send a sample to the lab for further diagnosis. The technician asked me if i have been experiencing a lack of power and its quite the opposite the car feels quicker. Lot of questions still in the air, i will keep you guys updated.

Well i made this thread to help other owners and potential buyers because i will conclude this thread with a resolution to whatever the problem was. A check engine light around 24000 miles is worthy to be noted.
And to address your question if the dealer will covers the parts and the answer is of course they will, that is what a warranty is about. Sorry you have to put up with this fellow. I wish I could say that he means well but mostly he is just mean. He does this picking and sniping on all the MB forums. When he is cordial I will engage him. Otherwise I ignore him without reply.

Update:
Just got back from the dealer and got into a whole tongue match with the service advisor and manager and had to call MBUSA for additional assistance while i was there. So heres what happened.
They claim the fuel quality of the diesel was not good, they claim it has some water in it. And of course they wanted to blame me and charge me for changing the fuel filter as well as draining the remaining quarter tank of fuel. The cost around $700. And on top of that attempted to charge me $200 for the inspection since the bad fuel is not covered.
Long story short, i called MBUSA, had a legitimate conversation with a very helpful specialist. I left the dealer with the inspectial fee of $200 waived, and they will call me in the morning after MBUSA contacts the service manager, but MBUSA assured me they will assist me or cover the whole project since it was not like i put gasoline in a diesel engine and its of no negligence of mine.
Something worth noting, i tracked down the MB technician who was working on my car and buddied up to him and asked him a few questions and he basically told me you have a quarter tank left, just go fill it up full right now and that would stabilize the fuel til the water burns out. He also disabled the check engine light at no cost. So i just filled up from Shell, and everything seems fine. I hope the check engine light does not come back because that might mean there is a problem with the water regulator or evaporator.
So the car drives fine and im going to take it on a 550 mile round trip to Vegas from Los Angeles and burn out the tank some more. Hopefully i just got a bad batch at a station and it nothing serious. The car is a lease anyway so im not worried at all.
