2007 ML320CDI Straight Pipe
Anybody out there run a cat-back straight pipe setup on their ML (or other OM642 engine)? I'm debating welding one up (currently modeled in Solidworks), but wanted to see if anybody has done this and how it turned out?

Be careful, you very well could end up with a lot of drone and ruin the ride quality from a cabin interior noise perspective. I would remove the exhaust pieces in chunks and drive it and see what you get.
1. Try Resonators first (Not enough sound, try removing the mufflers)
2. Mufflers (too much drone maybe consider putting the resonator back in, but leaving the muffler off)
Also back pressure is important for the motors power unless you tune for an exhaust so you might loose some low end grunt for the sacrifice of better sound. Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck

Thanks man! I plan on removing both rear mufflers next weekend. On the w164 diesels there are only 3 exhaust components post turbo: Cat, DPF, and a muffler on each side immediately before the tailpipe. I already cut out my DPF, so even with the mufflers gone I will still have the turbo's exhaust turbine and Cat present to provide *some* systrm back pressure.
As far as losing some low end is concerned, I guess I will see what happens! I will put up some pictures when it's done.

I dont see why it wouldn't, the principles are the same, Suck Bang Blow. I am close to getting my DPF removed and the car will make more power but settings need to be adjusted to account for it. That said removing all mufflers and resonators would remove a lot of back pressure, you will lose some bottom end but will gain on the top but that is based on my gas car experience.

If I'm not mistaken, making a straight (and large diameter) pipe from the turbo back will allow the turbo to spin as best as possible. The turbo, in turn, will provide the needed back pressure for emissions related BS. A muffler might be nice for noise control, unless you ride a Harley.
Naturally aspirated may be a different story.
