Two questions
I hate to bother you all again but I need two quick answers.
On my 08 E320 BlueTEC since I got it back from having the timing chain and the manifolds replaced I can smell diesel exhaust in the cabin when driving the car before it warms up then it goes away. Also the fuel mileage has dropped from 36-37 mpg on the highway to 32-33. Other than that the car runs terrific.
Ive read that the exhaust smell problem could be the fuel injector seal (s). Could this also be the problem with The mileage? If so is this an expensive fix? I just spent $2500 on the beast and I’m tapped out right now.

Black death can be an issue at any mileage.
Open the hood and stick you head under listening for hissing. You can ask somebody else to rev the engine.
But unless that is huge leak, it would not explain mpg drop.
Run some tests.

Visibly inspect each injector for seal failure ie Black Death. I had one under the manifold that got me. Very expensive esp if you can’t do the work yourself. I had to have mine replaced. Went ahead and changed all and had injections tested and cleaned. I went with the Honda seals. Seem thicker and more mailable.

I know very little mechanically. But I do know that these have a very specific torque sequence. Also the seats have to be possible honed for lack of a better word to get a good seal with a specific tool or something similarly set up. I did around 150k. Will probably repeat around 300 unless see problem sooner

We can guess forever, but unless you check it, it will be just whining.
I know first-hand how hard things are to access on this engine, but if you pull the top cover, you should be able to remove passenger side flexible foam insert and at least lift driver side to take a look.
Than pulling the filters for better inspection is always an option, although I hate reiserting driver side filter housing.
Good luck.

Is "Black Death" the gelling of the motor oil? If it is, I didn't know that leaky diesel fuel injectors caused it...

The mold wraps around each fuel line, each connector and each electrical cable.
Its been long time since I dealt with Black Death on cdi engine but I remember that to be pretty stiff material, who made solid clog when melted by engine exhaust under injector seal.
Not tempted to see how the flexible foam melts

When my Ford 6.0 turbodiesel did this it was a cracked down pipe from turbo, small crack but at highway speeds, especially towing, it must have somehow been aimed directly at cabin intake vent filter. Did they have turbo off or disconnected from downpipe? If so they may not have seated pipe and v-band perfectly, another source of exhaust leak.
I need to get one one of these cheap 07-08 Bluetech cars popping up locally with issues...by buddy at Mercedes dealer to my north just picked up a 60k mile 07 for $1800....it’s getting full treatment of mods now, can’t wait to try it out when he is done.

Hey, I spend $2500 for so-called rebuild 320 Bluetec engine, so $1800 for low mileage car will make me pack to Texas on 3 hr notice
One more time, I love my OM642 engine although I hate to work on it.
Seems this is the main issue with them.
Then engine is too complex for average DIY to work on, while dealers will charge you 2 grands to replace $20 worth of oil cooler seals.
Same with cleaning intake flaps.
My old engine at 180 k miles never had black death and I was able to pull the injectors with regural pliers.

You might have genius mechanic.
For average guy the distance between "going to fix" and "problem solved" is gigantic .
