R350 Diesel question.

Hi,

i hope im in right place on forum. I’m looking at buying car for my wife. I found a Mercedes R350 blutec with diesel motor. 2012, with 75k miles. Asking price $15k. Lovely vehicle, but I’m not sure in reliability of this motor. It just had timing chain replaced, but I was told runs great. Sounds good deal but worried that could be too good to be true. Is there anything I should know about these engines?

Thanks, Shane

First diesel for you? Do you do any DIY maintenance work?

This is OM642 engine also sold in earlier years as 320 Bluetec.
This is very complex engine and when DIY love it for performance, those who take the car to shops are scared with high labor cost due to engine complexity.
Typical sample, when $20 oil cooler seals fail, dealer will charge in excess of $2000 to fix it.
In another way, good engine, but not for everybody. If you can get it with extended warranty, go for it.

It’s an awesome motor, IF you are your own mechanic and tuner, if you are at the mercy of the dealership I would personally avoid it. I hope to have my blown spare motor back soon for test fitting in different chassis. Always thought a nineties Nissan Z32 turbodiesel hybrid would make an awesome toy car that ticked almost all the boxes for me.
