Digital guage for DPF status?

The DPF on our GLK will be replaced (under warranty) in a couple weeks. The part has arrived.

i strongly believe one of the factors in its demise is that we may not be completing regen cycles regularly. We have zero indication on whether the vehicle is in regen other than the smell from the hot exhaust (after we get out of the vehicle and it is already off). I don’t know how long a typical regen cycle lasts.

In my 2008 F250, regens occur ~200 miles and last ~15min or ~15 Miles. I use a scan guage II to monitor status, EGT, and DPF temps. As a result I know when to keep the vehicle running to complete a regen and also when to keep the truck running to cool down the turbos.

I would like to add such an accessory to our GLK in the interest of preventing future issues.

Does anyone know of a digital dash/guage (Banks IQ, Scan Guage II, etc) that can read the Benz memory locations and be mounted in the vehicle cleanly?

thanks
OJ

Great idea. Heck, even just a dummy light informing you that a regen is in effect would be great.

Agreed. I think Mercedes fell short on their diesel vehicles by not providing any indication of Regen. I know they try to maintain a philosophy that diesel technology doesn’t require special considerations and offers the same driver experience as gasoline, but the reality is quite different. Diesel vehicle owners do have a slightly different philosophy about their vehicles.

To my knowledge all manufacturers don't make any regeneration notification.
In 2016 models Ford had option of driver-controlled regeneration, but when I was custom-ordering 2017 model the option was no longer available.
My ScanGauge shows regeneration status and DPF ash % on Ford, but they don't support Mercedes at all.
My iCarsoft will show me DPF ash %, but that is all it will do, unless DPF is clog and then suppose it would allow me to force regeneration.
iCarsoft MB II is new scanner to me and even it shows lot of options, it still need to gain my trust.
It will read my ECU model number, but no live data at all and big scanner is uncomfortable to use during driving.
So the only option that is usable at the time is use Bluetooth plug and display temperatures on your android apps.
That still takes learning curve how to interpret temperatures.
Funny observation from my F350. When I plug in ScanGauge - it did show ash contest at 32%. I took truck on 400 miles trip with camper, what is significant load. The drive was 200 miles 1-way and 200 miles return.
During highway driving the ash % was dropping, so at some point, after over 1 hr of driving it come down to 2%.
Total 400 miles trip drop the ash from 32% down to 12% and regeneration never happen.

iCarsoft has generic DPF regeneration on main MB menu. I can make pictorial if you have problem finding it. It is very weird application and with small screen hard to read as it takes a minute to scroll single phrase, but after couple of tries it did work..
It is not giving % of ash, but units of unknown to me origin. The scanner allows max 250 units to start regeneration.
I emailed ScanGauge about making software for MB and got email back that they will forward the request to the specialist who comes back from his vacations next week.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Looks like you went into vehicle-specific pages.
I recheck it this afternoon and the 1st page after clicking Mercedes software is giving me about 7 generic functions where last one is DPF regeneration. Then it is asking you if you want to perform regeneration due too much oil blow, what needs to be answer "no"
It works on my car even the scanner is not recognizing my ECU and my car model is not in the menu.

Making a regen triggered status light circuit is very basic electronics, I’d say 60 minutes max for a semi crude install.

My car has no DPF, if I wire my Sprinter I can do a pictorial but I’ve got a Jeep Liberty CRD to replace engine wiring harness on (f-in rats) and an 04 Ford 6.0 F350 to make run first

It’s easy, you are literally just powering or grounding an additional circuit when some function comes on, or you can do it the fancy way and snip that little data packet out of the CAN stream but I’m more of a simple circuit sort of guy. During regen what is powered that normally is not? DEF pump? Just a thought.

When we can wait for Micah, I've got monitoring plugs from ScanGauge and plan to send them back today.
Looks like those people are serious about their product, so hopefully the gauge will support MB.

Scan Gauge has provided great support for other diesel vehicles, especially with their x-gauges. They will even preload the specifics for your vehicle if you tell them. I am anxiously awaiting the results and ready with my credit card to order one!
